When American Airlines Wants $313 More To Escape Basic Economy—You’re Still Flying Coach [Roundup]

News and notes from around the interweb: I’ve seen $450 price differences between basic economy and standard. This $313 difference isn’t that unusual, but still kills me. You want to pay more to the airline somehow – but on a trip out of your own pocket this is just nuts. The airline is going to see ‘the price we think we could charge if Frontier et al weren’t in the market’ and offer that price, and the price they need to offer to match Frontier, and those are your two prices. But telling an elite frequent flyer they aren’t worth offering benefits unless they spend several hundred more than the lowest fare is still a kick in the mixed nuts. This is why airline loyalty is dead ultimately – you’re no longer a valuable customer when you step onto one of their planes. It doesn’t matter if you’ve spent $50,000 on airfare in the past six months, or charged $1 million on their credit card. You’re giving them all your work trips, but a price sensitive weekend with the family you just don’t matter anymore. You are only your fare. The police report adds details: Palmela Handerson in seat 9D began hand-to-gland combat about 20 minutes after takeoff, put her pants back on when a flight attendant told her to, and slept for the rest of the trip. She told police she’d had several drinks during a two-hour delay and didn’t remember what happened. A body camera was used — hopefully the footage didn’t capture too much. 🚨CREEP ALERT🚨 A Maryland bartender allegedly took off her pants and began masturbating on an American Airlines flight when she was flying to Miami. According to a filing, Katy Inzer “remove(d) her pants and began to actively masturbate while making inappropriate sounds." When police confronted Inzer in Florida, they smelled and witnessed, “a strong odor of alcohol beverage and bloodshot eyes." I thought I had it bad, apparently all the creeps fly American Airlines. From a former pricing and revenue management analyst at a Gulf carrier. Imagine an airline wants to look outwardly successful while actually receiving government subsidy. They want their accounts to show profit. And for those accounts to be signed off by a reputable auditor. An easy and completely legal way to do this would be to ask that all government travellers pay full fare, regardless of the ticket price available on the day.
