Sign in to your Collider account This year, two legendary filmmakers returned to the sci-fi genre with disappointing results. Ridley Scott released The Dog Stars, his first sci-fi film since 2017's Alien: Covenant. The new movie received poor reviews and ended its box-office run with less than $40 million worldwide against a reported budget of $100 million. Scott isn't keen on leaving the world of sci-fi behind just yet, as he has expressed interest in completing his planned Alien prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus and continued with Covenant. A few weeks before The Dog Stars' release, Steven Spielberg made a sci-fi comeback after a hiatus from the genre that lasted eight years, which was touted as a spiritual successor to one of his most beloved films. Spielberg's last sci-fi movie was Ready Player One, which made nearly $600 million worldwide thanks to a terrific turnout in China. His latest film, on the other hand, barely broke even. Starring Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor, the film saw Spielberg returning to ideas he'd previously tackled in classics such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-terrestrial. The movie was written by David Koepp, who previously gave a sci-fi twist to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie also stars Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell in significant supporting roles. While Spielberg's new movie received mostly positive reviews from critics, audiences weren't entirely on board. That said, the film appears to have found its tribe following its release on home video.
