Published Nov 5, 2026, 6:17 AM EST Michael John Petty is a Senior Author for Collider who spends his days writing, in fellowship with his local church, and enjoying each new day with his wonderful wife and precious daughters. At Collider, he writes features, reviews, recaps, interviews, and breaking news on select occasion. In addition to writing about stories, Michael has told a few of his own, from supernatural thrillers to historical fiction. His Western short story, The Devil's Left Hand, received the Spur Award for "Best Western Short Fiction" in 2025 from the Western Writers of America, of which he is a member. Michael currently resides in North Idaho with his growing family. Although he's best known for his work in the Fast & Furious saga, Vin Diesel has had a long and colorful career that leans into sci-fi, historical drama, superheroes, and action flicks alike. But on just one occasion, the international superstar ventured into fantasy territory with the criminally underrated The Last Witch Hunter, a film that recently left Netflix only to arrive on the free-to-stream platform Tubi. That isn't to say that The Last Witch Hunter is a phenomenal piece of cinema, mind you—but it is an action-based urban fantasy popcorn flick that absolutely delivers on the spectacle, and for that reason, it's worth a watch. 'The Last Witch Hunter' Is a Wild Ride Worth Taking At Least Once The Last Witch Hunter exists in the same vein as films like Van Helsing or Underworld. It's a fantasy that anchors itself in an "old world" but updates the material to the present day. It could also be compared to I, Frankenstein (which is maybe not the best selling point), but Diesel's action-packed low-budget fantasy is better on just about every front. The 2015 feature follows a lone protagonist, a widower named Kaulder, who has been cursed with immortality by the Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht), who he kills after she has killed his family. With time on his side, Kaulder chooses to use his new curse to spend his days hunting down the sorcerers who have made the world a living hell. To help in his quest, Kaulder has allied himself with an organization called the "Axe and Cross," which assigns him a new "Dolan" every lifetime, from Michael Caine at the beginning to newcomer Elijah Wood. Of course, that begins to change when Chloe (Rose Leslie) enters the picture. For what it is, The Last Witch Hunter is actually a lot of fun. Not only is it a unique take on the witch-hunter concept, but the whole thing was grounded in Disel's own love for the fantasy genre. When speaking to HitFlix prior to the release of the film, the star revealed that his own experience growing up with Dungeons & Dragons was what inspired the titular character in the first place. Long before Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves made waves in 2023, Diesel met with screenwriter Cory Goodman (who had previously written The Searchers-inspired vampire thriller Priest), and the pair bonded over their shared love of D&D. The result was a movie inspired by Diesel’s own character Melkor the Witch Hunter, "a name that obviously I stole from The Silmarillion," Diesel added — and who hasn't stolen from Tolkien for D&D? (This author once named his dragon hunter "Eru Ilúvatar," if that tells you anything.) With plenty of rich fantasy lore at its center, this fast-paced, visually stunning, and creature-heavy action flick is 106 minutes you won't mind spending with Vin Diesel. A Sequel to 'The Last Witch Hunter' Is In Development The Last Witch Hunter may not have been well-received by critics or audiences, but the action is great and the special effects are nothing to write off, either. Even if Diesel's performance leaves a bit to be desired, it's hard to ignore the care and personal connection he put into bringing Kaulder's story to life. Perhaps what comes as the biggest surprise, however, is that The Last Witch Hunter is returning for more. Vin Diesel is working on a sequel, one that is set to bring even Michael Caine out of retirement to reprise his role as Dolan 36. Will it be able to live up to the wackiness of the original? Who knows, but considering many of us wish movies like Van Helsing had gotten their own sequels back in the day (or at least a television spin-off), those who enjoyed this supernatural thriller will certainly be happy. So, if you're looking for some mindless entertainment to enjoy on an otherwise free evening, give The Last Witch Hunter a go. It's an oddball take on the genre, but one with a rich mythology and some impressive visuals that make it worth the watch. Although Halloween is over, it's still fall, meaning that now is just as good a time to return to this strange supernatural world than now — especially now that you can stream it for free. The Last Witch Hunter is available for streaming on Tubi.
