‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Crosses $2.2 Billion Worldwide After Four Weekends

Sony/Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is continuing its charge towards the all-time domestic box office record with $39 million in its fourth weekend in theaters, remaining No. 1 on the charts over fellow Sony release “Insidious: Out of the Further.” The fourth “Spider-Man” film starring Tom Holland now stands at $855 million domestic and $2.22 billion worldwide, putting it on the verge of passing the global total of last year’s smash hit Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2.” The film remains on pace to pass “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the highest grossing domestic film of all time before inflation adjustment and become the third movie to cross $2.5 billion worldwide. “Insidious: Out of the Further” is in second with an opening weekend of $25.3 million domestic from 3,303 locations and $60.5 million worldwide, a good start for this $18 million co-production between Screen Gems, Stage 6 and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster even if it is below the $33 million domestic start of “Insidious: The Red Door” in 2023. Reception for “Out of the Further” has been mixed-to-positive with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 60% critics and 70% audience and a C+ on CinemaScore, the latter matching the grade of “The Red Door.” With this opening, the “Insidious” franchise has now passed $800 million in combined lifetime grosses over six films. Universal/Syncopy’s “The Odyssey” is in third on the charts, continuing its excellent holds with $19.5 million in its sixth weekend to reach $539 million domestic, passing “The Dark Knight” as Christopher Nolan’s highest grossing domestic release before inflation adjustment. With $1.44 billion worldwide, the film is now roughly $230 million away from passing “Jurassic World” to become Universal’s unadjusted highest grossing film of all time. More to come…
