OpenIndiana Hipster 2026.10 is out today as the newest six-month update to this operating system based on Illumos and with the lineage tracing back to the fruitful Sun OpenSolaris days. OpenIndiana 2026.10 now enables the "illumosfb" X.Org driver for UEFI frame-buffer support on the OpenIndiana live image. There are also a wealth of package updates from Firefox and Thunderbird 159 to GCC 15.3, LLVM Clang 23.1.4, Perl 5.44, Python 3.15.2, and more. There is also updated virtualization support with newer QEMU and VirtualBox releases, new TeX Live 2026, the Foliate ebook reader, and zoxide shell navigation tool. For the most part, the OpenIndiana 2026.10 is mostly about updating all of the bundled open-source software packages offered in this community-driven, Solaris-based ecosystem. As it's been a while since I last tried out OpenIndiana (going off prior OpenIndiana articles on Phoronix, about a decade ago for OpenIndiana testing...), I decided to try out OpenIndiana 2026.10 live. I used a Framework Laptop 13 Pro powered by Intel Panther Lake. It booted up to the MATE desktop albeit with most device driver support missing. Largely looking the same as when I last was testing OpenIndiana/OpenSolaris many years ago. The complete list of package updates with OpenIndiana 2026.10 can be found via OpenIndiana.org.
