Peter Quill finally wears his original dark blue Star-Lord costume and full helmet in his return to action, acting as an independent agent, far away from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Nowadays, the Guardians of the Galaxy are closely associated with the line-up of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot, popularized by James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy MCU movie trilogy. However, none of these characters are founding members in the comics, where other cosmic heroes like Yondu Udonta, Martinex T'Nada, and Vance Astro created the team. The modern Guardians line-up was established in 2008, debuting in Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 #1 following the catastrophic events of Annihilation: Conquest. This team assembly took place only six years before director James Gunn adapted the roster for the MCU in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, which also settled their definitive look in pop culture. Drax traded his original purple cape and simple bright green skin for red scarification tattoos across a muted teal hide, Groot's spike-covered body was streamlined, Gamora swapped her skimpy mesh apparel for a practical uniform, and Star-Lord gained his now-famous crimson leather jacket. As iconic as Star-Lord's leather jacket may be, Peter Quill's original uniform continues to be an essential part of the Guardians of the Galaxy leader's lore. Peter Quill Brings Back His Very First Star-Lord Costume Marvel Gold '76; Written By Stephanie Phillips; Art By Madibek Musabekov & Luis Guerrero This month, Marvel Gold '76 leaves the current events of the Marvel Universe's main timeline aside in order to pay homage to the most iconic Marvel characters introduced in 1976: Nova, Bullseye, Jack of Hearts, and Star-Lord. The hero who kicks off this one-shot comic is none other than Peter Quill, who arrives wearing his original Star-Lord cosmic suit and helmet. Star-Lord's original attire consists of a dark blue jumpsuit with white lines across his chest, shoulders, and arms, plus an open-face balaclava below an owl-inspired finned helmet featuring large round goggles. Marvel Gold '76's modern interpretation of Star-Lord's first costume makes a strong case for its return. In 1976's Marvel Preview #4, Star-Lord's debut costume barely looked like something a space outlaw would wear. After several visual overhauls throughout the years, Marvel has honored Peter Quill's original costume multiple times with newer black or dark blue variations and a similar capped helmet. However, Marvel Gold '76 is the first time Star-Lord wears his very first suit, largely unchanged, since his 1976 introduction, with the biggest change being the detailed art style that makes the tight-fitting gear look more like a realistic superhero costume. Marvel Has Another Chance To Adapt Star-Lord's Iconic First Costume To Live-Action Peter Quill's Original Suit Deserves At Least One Live-Action Appearance Ever since James Gunn turned the Guardians of the Galaxy into an A-list property, Star-Lord has been associated with Peter Quill's now-iconic red leather jacket and helmet-less mask. Only during his final adventures with the Guardians does Chris Pratt's Star-Lord wear a more faithful version of his dark blue Guardians uniform, albeit without his mask. Fortunately, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's post-credits scene promised that "The Legendary Star-Lord will return", which leaves the door open for the hero's return, potentially wearing the most comic-accurate iteration of his live-action costume so far. While it may be difficult to unlink Star-Lord from his vintage, leather-clad MCU appearance, Peter Quill's classic "space cop" attire is too emblematic not to adapt faithfully. Star-Lord's full helmet, complete with round goggles and a star shape on the forehead, is essential to the character's comic book roots. Moreover, Marvel Gold '76 #1 proves a faithful modernization of this costume can look great without losing its realism. Which Star-Lord costume is your favorite?
