Jane

Good Food hat15/20Updated October 26, 2026,first published November 11, 2024The comfortable backstreet bistro we all wish was around the corner.Imagine a “neighbourhood bistro” and you might envision this smart restaurant. Set among pretty Victorian terraces and glowing warm at night, its intimate dining room and bar beckons, encouraging everything from on-the-way-home pop-ins (it’s especially good if you’re flying solo) and lean-in feasts. You could happily stop by for a glass of sparkling from the all-Australian drinks list and a bowl of glorious lamb dumplings, or let the friendly waiters guide you through a feast. In either case, it all speaks with an Australian accent, and there’s some smart cooking happening, starting with stracciatella balanced with tart golden kiwi, or a chunky harissa-spiced kangaroo tartare served with scene-stealing house-made potato crisps. The Vegemite butter listed with the wagyu flank might raise an eyebrow, but just know that it works, delivering an essential umami hit. Finish with the salted-caramel tart with “native-spiced” cream and muntries, then if you don’t live nearby, dream of walking home.Good to know: If you’re a fan of Jane, visit sister restaurant Arthur down the road.Good Food reviews are booked anonymously and paid independently.
