Cafe Margaret

14.5/20Updated October 26, 2026,first published November 11, 2024Cafe MargaretContemporary$$What was once Next Door is now Cafe Margaret, but expect that same Neil Perry polish. We have to talk about the burger. But which one? The No. 1 American Cheeseburger made with a 200-gram CopperTree Farms and Blackmore Wagyu beef patty, rose mayonnaise, onion and pickles? Sure. Have at it. But if you’re going to follow proprietor Neil Perry’s lead on the menu and have it cut in half, you may as well share another. And it’s a cracker, the Margaret Burger, a neat cross-section of medium-rare beef, plus smoked bacon, gruyere, tomato relish and Zuni pickles, with the same bite you’ll find in San Francisco. But this slip of a restaurant right next to Perry’s flagship is no burger project. Inside or out, diners come day or night for the simply presented, produce-driven fare the chef made his name on, from a salad of gem lettuce given sweetness and crunch with apple, dates and almonds to a saucy plate of bigeye tuna sashimi on chopped lettuce and avocado with a sweet-savoury miso and honey dressing. The drinks are fresh, the buzz is palpable, the cooking is right on. What else would you expect from a chef who’s never done things by halves, well, except for his burgers that is. Must order: Give the Spencer Gulf king prawn burger a whirl, add the roast chicken with smoked eggplant dip, and clear the afternoon.Good Food reviews are booked anonymously and paid independently.
