I THINK it was an American bloke who coined the phrase: “You can’t go home again”. But I’m about to have a bash at doing just that, when I finally move back into Ghost House next week. Still, I’m confident being back in my own house will be a tonic. If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know all about my Marmite gaff – a brutalist concrete and steel three-bed detached – and while some have compared her to a car park, I’m always ready to go into battle to defend my pride and joy. Like me, she divides opinion in the best possible way. I first saw Ghost House in a newspaper article in 2018 (she gets her name because at night, she looks like she’s floating on the dyed-black ponds that surround her). She’d been nominated for a fancy design award, and it was love at first sight – so in 2023, we bought her. It was a dream come true during a strange time, as John had just got his cancer diagnosis. We threw our energy into the house and it was all hunky-dory, until we were hit with a flood and the whole place was 2in deep in water – that was a night and a half! The repairs started last September, so I’m grateful that we had that summer there together. John swishing about the garden in his yellow shorts is a memory I will cherish. We’d hoped to be back there together, but his cancer got the better of us, and he died in our rental house in February. Well, me and my Maltese terrier Kev Bear. I’m tempted to get him a doggy brother – one that can bite any burglars who fancy their chances! We were burgled last August – I’d booked a last-minute holiday before John had his next round of chemo, and while we were in Italy soaking up the sunshine, two lanky lads were cracking open our safe and stealing John’s watches and my Birkins. “The little buggers” John called them. I know I’m going to feel that bit closer to him when I’m back home. The plan is to have John’s ashes in an urn in the garden, so I can sit and have a brew with him. And I’ve made sure security is robust – it’ll be like Fort Knox. Not that there’s much worth robbing – John wanted me to feel safe after he was gone, so my diamonds and valuables are all in a safety deposit box in London. I’ve decided to convert his office into a bedroom. It’s a big house for one, and I’ll probably get lonely, but I hope my mates will schlep up the M40 to stay with me. Chloé jelly sandals I had a really similar pair as a child. Are they comfortable? No. Will I keep wearing them? Absolutely. Watching. . . The Love Island finale It’s been my all-time favourite series, and I’ll miss my nightly fix when it finishes tomorrow night. Enjoying. . . A teddy bear’s picnic My friend, her daughter and I had a picnic from Sofitel London St James. Our teddies were well-fed! Our stuff has been in storage, so I’m looking forward to getting my hands on John’s Global knives and Hexclad pans. I’m not much use in the kitchen – he did all the cooking – but I’m going to learn! My pal Elliott Grover, who’s a chef at 45 Park Lane, says he’ll teach me three dishes, because he is “legit worried” I might starve to death! The other conundrum is whether I should sell John’s Bentley convertible. The number plate fell off this morning – is that a sign he doesn’t want me to? John always drove me around like a princess, but when he got sick I took over. I’m pretty good, but he left a note in his phone that I’m to take an advanced driving course – so maybe I will keep the Bentley after all. Read Lorna’s other columns here.
