Iberia is one of Spain's largest airlines and the biggest carrier operating out of Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD). Since the beginning of this year, it has added several destinations to its network, including new transatlantic routes and shorter international connections. At the same time, it has continued to make changes to its existing network. In fact, the Spanish flag carrier has stopped flying to at least six international destinations that it served earlier this year. None of these routes are currently scheduled to return in 2027. The only exception is Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (VLN) in Valencia, Venezuela, where the IAG Group airline operated a handful of flights between July and August. However, these operations were temporary. The airline has historically served Venezuela through Maiquetía Simón Bolívar International Airport (CCS), which serves the capital, Caracas. But following a powerful earthquake in June, the airport suffered extensive damage and was temporarily closed. As a result, Iberia and other Spanish carriers, including Air Europa and Plus Ultra, diverted their operations to VLN. Iberia's Naples Services Are Temporarily Operating From Salerno In November Credit: Fasttailwind | Shutterstock In addition to the destinations mentioned above, Iberia has made another change to its network this November. The airline has temporarily moved its Madrid–Naples service to Salerno Costa d'Amalfi e del Cilento Airport (QSR), as Naples International Airport (NAP) is temporarily closed. Until Naples Airport reopens, Iberia is operating six weekly flights between Madrid and Salerno using its Airbus A320 aircraft. This route has been excluded from the list because the Spanish flag carrier is using an alternative airport rather than withdrawing from the market. According to airport operator GESAC, Naples Airport will remain closed until November 30 for a $33.4 million (€30 million) refurbishment project. The work covers approximately 250,000 square meters and includes rebuilding the runway pavement, renovating taxiways and replacing lighting and signaling systems. Because of the closure, several other carriers have suspended their services. Lufthansa, for instance, has suspended its Naples services for November and is rebooking affected passengers through Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). KLM and Volotea have also suspended their services during the closure. Overall, in lieu of Naples Airport, Salerno is accommodating flights to 15 domestic and international destinations, including Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Dubai. Iberia Launched Several New Transatlantic Routes In 2026 Credit: Iberia While Iberia has withdrawn from some destinations, it has also been adding new routes to its network this year, especially using its Airbus A321XLR aircraft. In January, the airline launched the first nonstop service between Madrid and Fortaleza–Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) in Brazil. Historically, TAP Air Portugal dominated the market between Spain and northeastern Brazil, and passengers traveling to Spain had to connect through Lisbon. Besides, in March, the Spanish flag carrier also introduced daily flights between Madrid and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), using the Airbus extra-long-range narrowbody. This was followed by the airline's return to Canada in June after an absence of nearly three decades. The oneworld member launched five weekly flights to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), again using the A321XLR. Elsewhere, Iberia has also introduced three weekly flights between Madrid and Monterrey International Airport (MTY) in Mexico, using its Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
