Dunedin hotel evacuated for second time in 24 hours after possible gas leak

Caption:Police are assisting with traffic control while fire crews assess the reported gas leak.Photo credit:RNZ / Nate McKinnonA central Dunedin hotel has been evacuated for a second time in 24 hours due to a possible gas leak.Firefighters were called to the Scenic Hotel Dunedin City on the corner of Dowling Street and Princes Street about 11.30am.Road closures are in place on both streets and people are being urged to avoid the area.Fire and Emergency says the smell of gas was reported to be coming from the basement and crews are assessing the property, but there are no injuries.On Monday afternoon the hotel was evacuated because of a possible gas leak from a faulty transformer.A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said at the time it was possible that a faulty transformer in the basement was producing hydrogen cyanide and the hotel had been evacuated as a precaution.
