Please try againTrips by automobile rose more than 12 per cent from the year before to 2.2 million as travellers gained a new route between Windsor, Ont. to Detroit, Mich.During the five days the Gordie Howe International Bridge was open in July, 23,500 returning Canadian residents and 19,600 U.S. residents entering Canada used the crossing.The bridge was supposed to open in early June, but was delayed over a dispute between the United States and Canada over compensation. Sources told Bloomberg that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick intervened to delay the opening and was pressing to renegotiate the deal for a larger share of toll revenue.By air, trips from the U.S. rose 0.6 per cent year over year to 567,000, marking the first increase since August 2023 and ending a 34-month streak of declines.Meanwhile, outside of the U.S., Canadians took 3.9 million trips abroad in July, up 6.9 per cent and the fourth straight month of year-over-year increases.Travel by U.S. residents to Canada was up 9.1 per cent to 3.5 million trips, the sixth month of gains.A million overseas residents also arrived in Canada, up 3.7 per cent from the year before, with the majority of the trips taken by air.
