Published Aug 3, 2026, 1:04 PM EDT Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased how Avengers: Doomsday will repeat a major plot device from 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. There are less than five months until the next Avengers hits theaters in December, and Marvel Studios is already getting fans ready for what is shaping up to be the biggest team-up of Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes ever seen on the big screen, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, as they work together to defeat Doctor Doom. Coming off a huge Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Feige told The Movie Report that, while he didn't want to spoil anything, fans will be "incredibly satisfied and yet incredibly surprised of where it's headed, and then we'll have a hard time waiting a year for [Secret Wars]." While the Marvel Studios head played coy about what exactly fans will find satisfying or surprising, he did explicitly say that fans will have a difficult time waiting an entire year for Avengers: Secret Wars, which comes out in December 2027, indicating that there will likely be a cliffhanger at the end of Doomsday. “I don’t want to spoil anything, but I think [fans] will be incredibly satisfied and yet incredibly surprised of where it’s headed and then we’ll have a hard time waiting a year for [Secret Wars].” This is reminiscent of Avengers: Infinity War, which ended with villain Thanos wiping out half of the world's population after succeeding in his mission to collect all the stones for the Infinity Gauntlet. After that film was released in April 2018, fans had to wait a whole year for the release of Avengers: Endgame in April 2019 to find out how that stunning cliffhanger got resolved. The main difference between then and now is that in between Infinity War and Endgame, Marvel released two other films—Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel—so at least there were other stories to keep fans entertained in the meantime. This time around, no other MCU movies are coming out in between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. So depending on what kind of cliffhanger Feige has up his sleeve, his comment that everyone will have a "hard time waiting a year" could turn out to be true. After the two-part Infinity War and Endgame arc, which included the Blip and major deaths, Marvel Studios closed out the Infinity Saga with Spider-Man: Far From Home before launching the Multiverse Saga with movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Deadpool & Wolverine and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The latest film is the just-released Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has earned positive reviews (with a 90% critic score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes) and grossed $927 million at the box office on just opening weekend alone. While there has been a lot of speculation about what the future holds for Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU, the franchise continues to move forward, with Doomsday and Secret Wars up next, with fans waiting to find out if Feige's cliffhanger tease lives up to the hype. Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on Friday, December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
