Texan carrier Avelo Airlines has drastically reduced its network from Wilmington International Airport (ILM), North Carolina, readjusting its network down to just a handful of nonstop destinations. The carrier dropped a total of eight routes in January, with one more terminated this August. Data from Cirium, an online aviation analytics company, shows Avelo's dramatic drop from the fourth busiest airport in the airlines network, to now 12th. This November, Wilmington will see a total of 11 weekly departures, down from 27 this time last year. A Growing Carrier Serving Secondary Airports Credit: Markus Mainka | Shutterstock Avelo is an ultra-low-cost carrier that was initially founded in 1987 as Casino Express Airlines. This changed to Xtra Airways in 2025 before becoming Avelo in 2021. The airline, under its new branding, had its first scheduled flight in April 2021 from Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to Sonoma County (STS). The carrier has rapidly expanded its network, focusing on affordable convenience for travelers, and operates point-to-point flights between secondary underserved airports. This avoids major airports with high landing fees and sees the airline primarily operate alone, instead of head-to-head with other major carriers.
