When it comes to optimizing Wi-Fi performance, most people focus on moving the router, switching bands, moving to a wired connection, or rebooting the router. However, none of these fixes address the one router setting you never checked, something that quietly slows down everything you do on your network. The default DNS servers your router is using add a tiny bit of latency to every query on every device. Whether you're using your browser, launching apps on your phone, or connecting to a game server, your ISP's DNS server is likely the worst option. Switching to a better DNS server can minimize this latency and even improve your network privacy. Your ISP's default DNS servers are problematic in several ways It's one of the first things you should change DNS, or Domain Name System, matches domain names to respective IP addresses before anything can load inside your web browser or app. The time it takes to "resolve" a domain name to its IP address is the delay you see till the first load, i.e., when stuff starts to appear on the screen. This delay should ideally be under 50 ms to ensure a smooth browsing experience. Visiting a new website, streaming on Netflix, or changing servers in an online game will suffer if your DNS server takes over 100–150 ms to resolve the domain name. Your ISP uses low-power equipment and geographically distant servers that choke when millions of users send queries at the same time. Your ISP can also see your unencrypted DNS queries, know your browsing habits, and show you targeted ads. If you've never changed the default DNS servers, you've likely been using a walled version of the internet, since ISPs can also block individual domains. Switching to free alternatives can speed up your network Fortunately, you have many of them to choose from While switching DNS servers by itself doesn't ensure complete privacy, it can at least speed up your browsing experience. Switching to Cloudflare or Google is what most people do, as these are free yet fast alternatives that easily beat ISP servers. If you want to test the actual lookup time of various DNS servers from your location, use DNS Speed Test and choose a free and reliable option. Changing the DNS servers in your router's settings depends on whether the ISP has exposed the setting. If you don't see the option in the WAN/LAN configuration section, change the DNS servers on your PC or phone instead. Alternatively, you can connect your own router to the ISP-provided router, put the latter in bridge mode, and change the DNS settings on the former. Setting up a local DNS is also an option, and it provides much more control and privacy over Cloudflare, Google, or other public DNS servers. It's a bit more involved, so you can get to it later, once you've already left your ISP's DNS servers behind. While you're at it, change some other settings as well Improve your network performance Switching DNS servers speeds up your connection tangibly, but you can also check other router settings if you want to further optimize your network's performance. Your router is probably set to choose Wi-Fi channels automatically, which isn't the best option, since the best channel keeps changing. Your router might have run a scan months ago, but it doesn't check channel congestion on the fly, so you might be stuck on a subpar channel. Use a tool like WiFi Analyzer to see which channels are the least congested on each band, and then choose the desired ones in your router's settings. Similarly, switching from the default channel width to a lower setting can actually improve your connection's reliability, thanks to reduced interference on narrower channels. Another simple setting to enable is QoS, so that your router can prioritize demanding traffic over less important stuff, ensuring your connection never feels sluggish. Don't ignore your router's DNS servers anymore The average user has probably never changed their DNS servers, and has suffered from high latency and reduced security for years. Switching to Cloudflare or Google should be the first step for most users, followed by self-hosting a local DNS server. It not only speeds up your network, but also heightens your browsing privacy.
