Almost every PC user is familiar with using a PC that seems to get slower and slower every year. A decade ago, you might have explained it away with an aging CPU or GPU, insufficient RAM, or the limitations of a spinning hard drive. Today, though, the reasons behind your PC feeling slower than ever have probably nothing to do with your components, at least not in the way you think. Given enough time, every PC, especially on Windows, will accumulate waste in the form of unnecessary background activity, storage issues, and third-party programs that do more harm than good. These culprits aren't as apparent as overheating hardware or outdated RAM capacity, so they're often ignored by most users. Fixing them, however, can return your PC to its best days. Needless background overhead Regular upkeep is necessary Installing too many programs on your Windows PC is not your fault, but failing to remove the ones you no longer need can be counted as a mistake. Over the course of a year or two, you would have installed dozens of first-party and third-party programs on your PC, many of which you may have replaced with better alternatives already. The needless programs, however, are still running on your PC every time you boot into Windows. Unless you uninstalled those programs or disabled them from the list of startup programs in Task Manager, your PC is devoting resources to a bunch of background processes to stuff you never use. Add to it the list of unwanted background services that Windows 11 runs on its own, and you're looking at a sizable drag on your CPU and RAM. You may not know what's causing it, but you will definitely feel it when launching apps or switching between browser tabs. The best fix for this problem is to regularly glance at the list of startup programs that are "Enabled" in Task Manager. Whichever program is unwanted on boot, disable it. Uninstall it if you don't use it anymore. You'll no longer slash your boot time by a few seconds, but make your PC slightly more responsive. PC optimization programs Optimize your PC by steering clear of them As your PC becomes slower every few months, you might be tempted to use third-party performance boosters and optimization tools to get back some of the speed you lost. Programs like CCleaner, Razer Cortex, and Advanced SystemCare claim to clean your registry, delete junk files, release system memory, and speed up your internet. Most of these tasks can be performed with built-in Windows settings and utilities, making these tools redundant. The more concerning bit is that some of these programs can actively harm your system's performance. Aggressively releasing RAM by terminating processes and cleaning the registry carelessly does more harm than good. Windows is already adept at memory management, and registry cleaning doesn't yield any benefit on modern PCs. These tools become nothing but bloatware, duplicating built-in functions and consuming system resources. Avoiding proper power cycling for extended periods Don't rely on Sleep and Hibernate forever I love using Sleep mode as much as the next Windows user, but it has its downsides. Resuming your PC from standby is highly convenient, but skipping a complete power cycle for months on end does your system no good. If you never use "Shut Down" on Windows 11, you run the risk of accumulating memory leaks, driver conflicts, and missed updates. A proper power cycle ensures Windows releases system resources and installs important updates. If your PC has been acting up of late, feeling sluggish during basic navigation, you might need to shut it down. A while back, I saw almost 90% RAM usage in Task Manager despite nothing running in the background except a few browser windows. A power cycle fixed the issue, and I've learned to turn my PC off at least once every two weeks ever since. Leaving no breathing room on the primary SSD Using all of the space you paid for isn't ideal Even a Gen3 NVMe SSD is fast enough for most workloads today, so your PC slowing down isn't the SSD's fault. It's actually yours if you fill it to the brim. SSDs need some amount of free space for efficient garbage collection, i.e., reorganizing data in the NAND cells to ensure empty cells are always available for new writes. This process happens silently in the background when your SSD has a lot of free space, but becomes increasingly resource-heavy once it fills up. This cleanup process now has to occur during drive writes, tanking the transfer speeds as the drive struggles to find empty cells. Another downside of keeping your SSD almost full is a shrinking "pseudo-SLC cache." This dynamic cache is necessary to maintain the advertised high speeds of the drive. On a nearly full drive, this high-speed buffer shrinks as the drive can't find empty cells to use as pseudo-SLC cells. This is why it's recommended to keep 10-15% of your SSD empty, so that the garbage collection and dynamic cache can work as intended. This will prevent your SSD from slowing down over time. Your PC will eventually slow down, but blaming the hardware is probably misguided Enough time will bring any high-end PC down several notches on the performance ladder, but aging hardware is probably not the culprit. Windows PCs can build up tons of bloat over time if you're not careful. They can consume system resources in the background, stealing precious performance from your games and other important applications. Keeping enough free space on your SSD and turning the PC off periodically also help keep things snappy.
