Your Nvidia GPU is probably running wrong, and these Control Panel changes fix it

I have owned my Nvidia GPU for long enough to know that installing the drivers is nowhere near the end of the setup process. What I didn't realize when I first built my PC, though, was just how many little Nvidia Control Panel settings I would eventually discover months into owning the card. None of these settings are particularly obscure once you figure out where to look, either. I just wish I had known about them on day one instead of slowly stumbling across them over several months of using my GPU. If you're setting up a new Nvidia GPU today, these are the changes I would make immediately instead of waiting to discover them the hard way like I did. Check your refresh rate first, always Your monitor might be stuck at 60Hz instead of its native rate We all like to think we would notice if our 144Hz or 165Hz monitors drop to 60Hz, because the mouse feels less fluid, animations suddenly lose their smoothness, and games don't feel quite right. However, you'd be surprised by just how many people do not notice a refresh rate change. A driver update or clean installation can reset the refresh rate, and plenty of people continue using their PCs like this for weeks. This is one setting I wish I'd checked on day one while setting up my partner's PC early last year. I'd assumed that they would have switched their PC's refresh rate to the monitor's native 120Hz, but they hadn't. It wasn't until I headed into the Nvidia Control Panel, clicked on Change resolution, and looked at the Refresh rate dropdown that I saw her using the PC at a 60Hz refresh rate instead of the native frame rate that was double what the Nvidia Control Panel decided. This one does sound obvious, but that is precisely why it belongs here. There is very little point in tweaking latency, frame rates, or image quality if your display can natively support triple-digit refresh rates but is stuck running at 60Hz. I never realized my display was using Limited RGB Stop your GPU from making your display look washed out If you're already in Change resolution checking your refresh rate, there is another setting here that deserves your attention — one you shouldn't click out of the Control Panel without checking out first. Output dynamic range can be set to Limited on HDMI connections, particularly when Windows, your display, or a fresh driver installation decides to be "helpful." This ends up making your image quality look exactly how you'd expect: blacks end up looking gray, colors all become flatter, and the overall panel loses the punch it should hold. In the Nvidia Control Panel, under Output dynamic range, select Full and make sure Output color format is set to RGB where your display supports it. This tells the GPU to use the full range of available RGB values instead of squeezing the image into the narrower range intended for certain video equipment. Fair warning: once you do change this setting, you'll be baffled by how you even tolerated the old setting in the first place. If your blacks already look properly black, though, then you may not see a dramatic difference. But it is absolutely worth checking out after a new, clean driver installation. I wish I'd changed my Power Management Mode sooner Give your GPU a reason to stay ready Nvidia tends to hide some settings that can actually change how your GPU behaves while gaming, and it packs them up in perhaps the most important menu in the Control Panel — Manage 3D settings. The one you must always change on a performance-focused desktop built for gaming is the Power management mode. Nvidia defaults this to "Normal" or "Optimal power," depending on the driver, but you should always toggle it to Prefer maximum performance for games where consistency matters. Instead of aggressively managing GPU clocks around the workload, this setting tells the GPU to prioritize staying ready for maximum performance. That's what helps avoid unnecessary clock-speed fluctuations and, in some situations, reduce the little inconsistencies that can manifest as stutter. The Prefer maximum performance setting can increase power consumption, heat, and fan noise, which can be particularly annoying for GeForce laptop users. Set a sensible Max Frame Rate Fewer frames can actually make your experience better Here is a setting I ignored for years because I assumed that more FPS was always better. Max Frame Rate lets Nvidia impose a driver-level FPS ceiling, and there are plenty of situations where that is exactly what you want. If you have a high-refresh display with G-SYNC or VRR, capping your games slightly below the panel's maximum refresh rate can help keep the GPU inside the variable-refresh window. It can also stop your GPU from rendering hundreds of frames you will never see, which means lower power consumption, less heat, and potentially less fan noise or coil whine. Plus, since the GPU isn't constantly pushing against an unnecessary ceiling, the whole system can feel more controlled. A solid rule of thumb here is to set the cap based on your own display and what your GPU can realistically sustain. For a 144Hz monitor, for example, something around 141 FPS can make far more sense than letting the GPU run completely uncapped. Make sure you turn on Low Latency Mode Why queue frames unnecessarily? Low Latency Mode sounds more complicated than it really is. To put it simply, your GPU can queue frames before they are rendered, which gives the processor some work to prepare in advance. That can be useful for keeping the pipeline fed, but it can also add a little delay between your input and what actually appears on the screen. Low Latency Mode reduces that render queue, helping your inputs reach the screen sooner. Always use Nvidia Reflex if a game supports it for its latency settings. Reflex manages the entire latency pipeline at the game level, superseding the driver-level setting. In the Nvidia Control Panel, head to Manage 3D Settings and look for Low Latency Mode in the Global Settings tab. You'll find three options here: Off, On, and Ultra. I generally recommend On as the sensible starting point, but Ultra is what I keep my RTX 4070 Ti-powered PC at. The latter is particularly useful in games where minimizing latency is very important, provided, of course, the GPU has enough headroom. Ultra low-latency isn't automatically better for everything, though, which is an important point to keep in mind. NVIDIA App The Control Panel is worth a visit We only tend to visit Nvidia's Control Panel when something goes wrong. Otherwise, on the "good" days, it sits quietly on the PC, receiving driver updates and rarely ever giving users a reason to open it. That's perhaps the biggest reason why so many of its settings remain untouched for years. Realizing how long I had owned my GPU withotu knowing about these settings is what bothered me the most. None of these settings felt particularly revolutionary once I actually understood what they did. What bothered me was realizing how long I had owned my GPU without knowing about some of them. I don't think anyone needs to become obsessed with every toggle Nvidia has tucked away in the Control Panel, though. The point here is to treat the Control Panel as part of setting up the GPU on day one rather than something to eventually explore if you run into a problem.
