EXCLUSIVE: It's been two years since Young Sheldon ended its seven-season run on CBS, and the author of a new behind-the-scenes book is revealing which storylines never made it to air. Two years before the hugely popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory wrapped, CBS ordered a prequel series centered on a younger Sheldon Cooper. Viewers got to see what the fan-favorite character was like as a child and how he dealt with his family, including mother Mary, father George, brother Georgie, sister Missy, and grandmother Connie (aka Meemaw). The franchise has continued to expand in recent years, but audiences can now revisit the first spinoff with the new nonfiction book Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy. In an interview with ScreenRant's Adam Holmes, author Jessica Radloff shared what viewers never got to see in the final season. Young Sheldon season 7 had 14 episodes, the fewest in the show's history, mainly because Hollywood strikes delayed production. However, that meant the producers and writers couldn't include everything they envisioned for the final season. Radloff revealed that one scrapped storyline involved Pastor Jeff and Officer Robin's niece, who lived with them. The girl befriended Missy, and they got into trouble together. According to the author, "That was something that they were going to expand" in season 7. The writers also wanted to show Sheldon in Germany longer, but "they needed to get him and Mary back to Medford since they were running out of time." During the Young Sheldon season 6 finale, Sheldon and Mary travel to Germany for a summer research program. Meanwhile, a tornado rips through Medford and demolishes Connie's house. When the series picks back up in season 7, Mary wants to get back home but ends up staying in Germany with Sheldon. The Germany storyline wraps up by episode 4, but as Radloff noted, it would have continued further into the season if they had more episodes. Radloff added that the writers "were lucky" to get 14 episodes for Young Sheldon season 7 because they "weren't sure they were even going to get that many." Even with 14, some storylines had to be "shifted around," which made the ordeal evenmore challenging. Compounding these problems was the fact that the cast and crew were having to say goodbye to each other, which "everybody was very sad about." ScreenRant: Some storylines had to be abandoned for the final season. Are there any you can share? Jessica Radloff: "Yeah, there's a couple that come to mind. One is Pastor Jeff's niece that lived with Pastor Jeff and Officer Robin and became friends with Missy, and they started to get in trouble. That was something that they were going to expand. Had there been more episodes in season 7, the writers also talk about how Sheldon was going to be in Germany longer, but they needed to get him and Mary back to Medford since they were running out of time. So those are some of the storylines that they indicate, you know, had to kind of be shifted around, and they were lucky to get the 14. They weren't sure they were even going to get that many. So it was hard. Season 7 was really hard for the cast too because it was just—it was long, long one goodbye that everybody was very sad about." Radloff's new book has been making headlines online, with stories emerging about what really went on behind the scenes of the comedy series, including star Iain Armitage's alleged on-set behavior, how the cast felt blindsided by the Georgie & Mandy spinoff, andmore. Despite the writers having to abandon several storylines, viewers have widely praised Young Sheldon's final season, giving it a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Young Sheldon may be over, but the franchise lives on via Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and now the brand-new behind-the-scenes book by Radloff, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy. Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on CBS.
