Yamaha YZF-R2 makes global debut in India, launched at Rs 2.30 lakh

The new Yamaha YZF-R2 gets a 204cc engine producing 26.5bhp, a 149kg kerb weight and a segment-first bi-directional quick shifter.India Yamaha Motor has launched the YZF-R2 in India at a starting price of Rs 2,30,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Notably, India is the first market globally to get the new R-series motorcycle, which becomes Yamaha's first offering in the 200cc segment. The YZF-R2 will be available across Yamaha's Blue Square dealerships from mid-September 2026.The YZF-R2 is offered in three variants and five colour options. The base variant is priced at Rs 2,30,500 and is available in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray. The YZF-R2 with a quick shifter costs Rs 2,39,500 and can be had in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue. Meanwhile, the range-topping YZF-R2 M is priced at Rs 2,53,000 and comes exclusively in Metallic Gray. All prices are ex-showroom.Yamaha YZF-R2 designThe YZF-R2 takes design inspiration from Yamaha's newer R-series motorcycles, with a sharp, aerodynamic fairing and a compact bi-functional LED headlight flanked by LED position lights. The front fairing draws aerodynamic inspiration from the R9, while the rear gets a block-style LED taillight inspired by the R1. The motorcycle also features a MotoGP-inspired swingarm.With the YZF-R2, Yamaha is aiming to offer a lightweight supersport motorcycle that combines performance-focused hardware with everyday usability. The company says the motorcycle has been developed in Japan in collaboration with its Indian counterparts and sees India as an increasingly important part of its global product strategy. Yamaha says the YZF-R2 will strengthen its R-series portfolio in India, which has crossed the one-million-unit mark on Indian roads.Yamaha YZF-R2 engine and performancePowering the YZF-R2 is a newly developed 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-valve engine with DOHC and fuel injection. It produces 26.5bhp and 19.1Nm of peak torque. The engine uses a finger-follower rocker-arm valvetrain with Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating, derived from technology used on Yamaha's R1. Yamaha has focused heavily on keeping the motorcycle lightweight. The YZF-R2 uses a high-tensile steel tube diamond frame and has a kerb weight of 149kg, which the company claims makes it the lightest motorcycle in its segment. The frame is inspired by the chassis dimensions of the YZF-R6 and uses a four-point engine mounting system with an additional mounting point to improve rigidity and stability.Suspension duties are handled by 37mm upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock. The motorcycle also gets 17-inch wheels, dual-channel ABS, traction control and an Assist & Slipper Clutch as standard.Yamaha YZF-R2 gets quick shifter and riding modesThe second variant of the YZF-R2 introduces a third-generation bi-directional quick shifter, which Yamaha describes as a segment-first feature. The range-topping YZF-R2 M also gets the quick shifter along with adjustable front forks, rear shock absorbers, clutch lever and brake lever. It further features a faux suede-finished seat, 3D embossed emblem, silver-finished swingarm and a shot-blasted muffler end cap.The motorcycle comes with Yamaha Ride Control (YRC), offering three riding modes: Street, Sport and Rain. It also gets a 5-inch full-colour TFT display with ride and navigation information.
