Two arrested over $1.6 million luxury watch heist in Tokyo

TOKYO – Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) on Aug 27 arrested two Chilean nationals on suspicion of stealing luxury watches from a high-end watch boutique inside the Nakano Broadway shopping complex in Tokyo.According to the police, Pina Guzman Jeremy Paolo, 23, and Manzano Quezada Boris Alexis, 33 – both of whom have unknown addresses and occupations – allegedly broke a display case with a hammer at Time Walker in the shopping complex in Nakano Ward, Tokyo, at around 11.50am local time on Aug 25 .They allegedly stole three Richard Mille watches and a Patek Philippe watch. The price of the four watches totaled 200 million yen (S$1.6 million).Investigators from the MPD detained the two at a minpaku private lodging in Osaka on Aug 27. The suspects were found in possession of one wristwatch of the same brand as one of the stolen items. The police are verifying if the watch is stolen property.Manzano admitted to the charges, telling police that he intended to sell the watches for cash and take the money back to his home country.The two reportedly arrived in Haneda Airport on Aug 21 from Sydney for a short-term stay in Japan.The two fled – one on an electric kick scooter and the other on foot – from the scene, according to investigators.
