The allegations were first levied by Reddit user Acrobatic_Pianist688, who claimed to have seen the Blizzard GM in question “death touching mobs." The post and others like it sparked concern among the community over how widespread the issue truly was — were there other game masters helping their friends cheat? Blizzard has now investigated the claims and fired the GM in question, assuring players that this was an isolated incident. “As we mentioned, we internally monitored and confirmed a recent incident in which a World of Warcraft group gained an unfair advantage by abuse of access to development-only spells on a live realm,” community manager Randy ‘Kaivax’ Jordan said on the World of Warcraft forums. “Our tools confirmed what was also surfaced in community discussions, and we have investigated the incident carefully,” he continued. “We can confirm that this was the action of a single Blizzard employee, in violation of our Code of Conduct. This employee is no longer with the company effective immediately. We are also taking action against the player accounts that were complicit in this violation.” Only One Game Master Was Found To Be Abusing Developer Exclusive Spells via Xbox.com Kaivax explained that only a small number of Blizzard employees are able to use developer tools and spells on live servers in order to test and make urgent fixes to the game. Each of these spells is logged with the Platform Security team to ensure that their use is warranted, which is how Blizzard was able to verify that no other game masters had abused their access. “The use of development tools for anything other than development work is against company policy,” Kaivax said. “It’s because of the process we have in place around use of these tools that we’re confident this incident was isolated to one individual.” Concluding the statement, Kaivax thanked the community for sharing the information and expressing “real concern for the integrity of the game.” “When your findings line up with ours, it helps confirm that our own tools are catching what they should,” Kaivax ended the post. “And we’re grateful for the way we work alongside you all to protect the game and each other.” Systems Released November 23, 2004 ESRB T for Teen: Blood and Gore, Crude Humor, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence (online interactions not rated) Developer(s) Blizzard Publisher(s) Blizzard Engine Unreal Engine Multiplayer Online Multiplayer Cross-Platform Play pc, ps Cross Save yes Expansions World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic
