WhatsApp gets bill payment feature in India, lets you pay utility bills from app

This will let WhatsApp users pay their everyday utility bills like electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card dues, and loan repayments without ever leaving the app. The feature runs on the Bharat Connect network, also known as BBPS, and covers more than 22,700 billers across 30 categories.Notably, WhatsApp's new feature puts the messaging platform in direct competition with companies like PhonePe and Google Pay. Both of them also heavily rely on Bharat Connect (BBPS), and together, according to NPCI data, they control over 80 per cent of India's UPI and digital utility payment market. Now, with the Bill Payments feature, WhatsApp has also pulled up its socks to claim its share in the same market.How bill payments work on WhatsAppTo get started, users just need to tap the rupee icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen, select a bill category and biller, add and confirm their account details, and then pay using UPI, a debit card, or a credit card. Once a bill is paid this way, that biller shows up on the Payments Home screen for quicker access the next time around.The feature also supports managing multiple accounts under the same biller, so someone can track and pay bills for their home, office, and family from a single place instead of switching between different apps or logins. Frequently used bill categories appear automatically on the Payments Home screen, with a "See All" option to browse the complete list of over 20 categories. Part of a bigger push into everyday utilityThis isn't the first time WhatsApp has tried to become more than just a messaging app in India. People already use it to recharge mobile numbers, book metro tickets in several cities, and access government services through official chatbots, all inside the same chat interface they use to talk to friends and family.
