Wet and stormy start to the week, but ‘bright and clean’ conditions coming

October 26, 2026 — 8:39amResidents of south-east Queensland are bracing for another wet week as a weather system bringing heavy rain and possible storms persists across the region.Rain soaked broad parts of eastern and south-eastern Australia at the weekend, with Queensland copping the highest rainfall totals, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The inland Wide Bay-Burnett region north of Brisbane and the Central Ranges recorded between 200-300 millimetres of rain by the end of Sunday.More rain is on the way for soaked parts of Queensland. Catherine Strohfeldt“[It’s been an] incredibly wet weekend across southern Queensland, which has continued over the last week due to a blocking high-pressure system in the Tasman Sea,” senior meteorologist Sarah Scully said.“Many parts of Queensland have seen two to four times their average October rainfall in the last week.”Scully said a severe storm “stalled” over the Darling Downs in the early hours of Monday morning, dropping more than 100 millimetres of rain over 12 hours in parts.A severe thunderstorm warning in place across south-east Queensland, including the south-east coast, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, was cancelled just after 7am.Senior meteorologist Angus Hines said the storms had weakened and were moving out across the water, but with warmer temperatures could return after midday, particularly over the border in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.“The temperature [today] is back to that 30–31 degrees range,” Hines said.“[It’s] fairly humid as well, lots of moisture around after the recent rainfall.“So about lunchtime or perhaps early afternoon, we could see more severe storms around the area.”Hines said the week ahead would bring “longer nice weather gaps” between rain, cloud cover and cooler temperatures, with conditions easing by the weekend.“Thursday [and] Friday looks like overall much brighter conditions with just a lower chance of showers. From our partners
