Weeping Bernie left broken in Coronation Street as Kit reveals his breast cancer diagnosis

Coronation Street’s Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) has finally told his mum Bernie Winter-Alahan (Jane Hazlegrove) that he has stage three breast cancer. The local copper received his diagnosis earlier this month after secretly attending hospital appointments. After discovering that his family have a history of carrying a BRCA (Breast Cancer) gene mutation, Kit got tested, knowing that if he had the change in the gene, it raised the risk of him developing certain types of cancers. Last week, Kit attended another appointment with his consultant at hospital. The doctor explained the plan for his surgery and treatment, and strongly suggested that Kit told his loved ones about what he’s going through. That evening, Kit joined the family at Dev’s (Jimmi Harkishin) for dinner. He got very close to telling Bernie about his diagnosis, but Gemma Winter-Brown (Dolly-Rose Campbell) interrupted with a comment about Bernie having her BRCA test tomorrow. She was very nervous about the test, but revealed after that she felt extremely calm once she had noticed that the nurse’s name was Paul. Spiritual Bernie gained comfort in the fact the nurse reminded her of her late son Paul, who died after being diagnosed with MND. Dev felt glad that Bernie was able to get through the test because she felt connected to her son, while Kit just grew irritated by his mum’s comments. To Bernie’s shock, Kit then revealed that he believes she has the gene mutation, because he has it… and stage three cancer. As their chat ended, she kissed him on the cheek, and Kit quickly left the house. Bernie tried to be strong, but she soon fell apart in Dev’s arms. Actress Jane Hazlegrove is no stranger to BRCA. Not only did she do her research for this story, but she’s got some first hand experience. ‘I knew a little bit about BRCA and male breast cancer personally, as someone in my life dealt with it a long time ago’, she explained to us. ‘It’s rarely discussed or referred to, so I was thrilled that Corrie was starting this conversation. In my own recent experience at a breast clinic, I saw only one pamphlet on the wall regarding male breast cancer, yet there were two men there at the same time. It blew my mind. We need to be having these conversations.’ Kit has stage three breast cancer (Picture: ITV) ‘Regarding my own research for Bernie’s story, I was already familiar with the BRCA gene because, unfortunately, many people have their own stories to tell. On my mother’s side of the family, many women passed away in their 40s.’ ‘When I was living in London, my mother was tested for the BRCA2 gene because all of her first cousins were very ill, and not all of them survived. She discovered she was a carrier of the mutation, as were her sister and her brother. Both women underwent elective mastectomies in their 30s and had their ovaries removed as well. They are doing fine now.
