Villages have been washed away: Singer Papon urges support for Assam flood victims

Singer Papon has urged people in India and across the world to support those affected by the floods in Assam, saying the devastation this year is far worse than what the state usually sees. In a video shared on Instagram, he said entire villages had been washed away, many people were still homeless, hundreds were missing, lives had been lost and many animals had died.His appeal comes as Assam continues to face a severe flood crisis. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, over 5.24 lakh people remained affected across five districts, while two more deaths in the past 24 hours pushed this year's flood-related death toll in the state to 68.Sharing the video, he wrote, "To my friends, colleagues and everyone to whom this matters. Please help if you can (sic)."In the video, Papon said Assam receives heavy rain and faces floods every year, but added that the condition this time was difficult to imagine. He said, "Village after village has been washed away," and described the situation as very serious. He also said people were still without homes and that many animals had perished in the floods. He said it was a matter of humanity and that everyone must come together and do whatever they could as quickly as possible. He added that people and different organisations in Assam were already doing their bit on the ground, including through their own groups, and asked anyone who wanted to help to come forward. The ASDMA said 5,24,700 people have been impacted in Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts. Charaideo remains the worst-hit district with nearly 1.9 lakh people affected, followed by Sivasagar with over 1.5 lakh and Jorhat with around 1.4 lakh. The administration has been running 354 relief camps and aid distribution centres in four districts, where 37,724 displaced people are being looked after.The official bulletin said 763 villages were under water and 48,742.09 hectares of crop area had been damaged across the state. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also suffered damage in several districts. The Dhansiri river at Numaligarh is flowing above the danger level, while 88,240 domestic animals and poultry have also been affected.Other public figures have also spoken about the crisis. Actor Bhumi Pednekar recently urged people to support relief efforts in Assam and to use social media to amplify the situation, while the Bharat Disaster Relief Foundation thanked her for helping raise awareness about its Assam Flood Relief Mission.
