The world’s largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown, which boasts an impressive 106-foot wingspan, has just completed its maiden flight in the US, at just USD five worth of electricity. Developed by Heart Aerospace, the X1 demonstrator lifted off from Plattsburgh International Airport in New York on Wednesday, August 12. The piloted aircraft remained in the skies for about 27 minutes and made it to a 1,100-foot altitude above ground level (AGL). According to the Swedish aerospace company, the aircraft has a wingspan of 106 feet (32 meters). It’s additionally 76 feet (23 meters) long and has a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 lbs (11,340 kilograms). It reportedly delivered more than one megawatt (MW) of power during the flight. The electricity it used for the entire mission cost no more than five dollars. “With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” Anders Forslund, Heart Aerospace founder and CEO, pointed out. The five-dollar flight The debut flight was carried out under an FAA Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category (SAC-EC). The test profile included taxi, takeoff, climb, maneuvering, as well as landing. Forslund said that they designed the X1 to show that electric propulsion can work in an aircraft that is large enough for commercial airline operations. It will be able to carry up to 30 passengers and is targeted to enter service in 2031. The company is currently developing the first pre-production ES-30 at its pilot manufacturing plant in Los Angeles. Flight testing is scheduled to begin in 2028. The United Airlines, Air Canada, and JSX have already made commitments for the aircraft. “Electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and, ultimately, lower the cost of air travel for passengers,” Forslund said. “This is at the heart of our vision for abundant air travel, with electrification enabling more affordable, frequent, and cleaner air service to and from airports closer to home.” Cheaper regional flights Electric propulsion has tremendous potential for boosting efficiency, and slashing energy consumption in aviation. “This is at the heart of our vision for abundant air travel, with electrification enabling more affordable, frequent, and cleaner air service to and from airports closer to home,” Forslund shared. He expects the ES-30 to slash aircraft operating costs by more than 40 percent in comparison with legacy regional aircraft. The savings are set to come from lower energy costs, simpler maintenance, and greater aircraft reliability. The aircraft flies above Plattsburgh, New York, at sunrise during its first flight. For comparison, global jet fuel prices averaged USD 3.5 per gallon during the first week of August. This represents a 63-percent increase from 2025. Benn Stabler, Heart Aerospace’s CTO, said that the X1 gave the firm the ability to design, build, test, operate, and continuously refine commercial aircraft. “We are carrying that full-stack capability directly into the ES-30, our first production aircraft and the foundation of a broader technology platform for electric airliners,” Stabler concluded in a press release.
