US signs mega $58.6bn deal for Patriot missiles as stock runs low amid Iran war

The United States has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to produce Patriot interceptor missiles, marking one of the Pentagon's biggest air defence procurement deals as conflicts in Iran and Ukraine continue to deplete critical missile stockpiles.The US Army said the contract converts a previous one-year, $4.7 billion agreement awarded in April into a seven-year procurement framework covering fiscal years 2026 to 2032, ensuring long-term production of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) interceptors.The deal comes amid growing concerns over the Pentagon's dwindling inventory of key air defence weapons after supplying large quantities of munitions to Ukraine and allies while also using interceptors during recent military operations against Iran.According to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the US military currently has fewer than 1,000 Patriot interceptors and less than 250 THAAD interceptors, both of which have been used extensively in the Middle East in recent months.The agreement is part of a broader Pentagon push to rapidly expand missile production. Earlier this year, the US also reached a similar framework agreement with RTX, Raytheon's parent company, to increase annual production of Tomahawk cruise missiles from around 60 missiles to as many as 1,000.The Trump administration has intensified pressure on defence contractors to accelerate weapons manufacturing amid rising global security challenges. President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January directing officials to identify contractors underperforming on government contracts while continuing shareholder payouts.Industry executives have welcomed the multiyear production agreements but said companies require Congressional funding approvals before making significant investments in manufacturing capacity and supply chains.Lockheed Martin said the new agreement would support its plan to triple PAC-3 MSE production capacity by the end of 2030 and increase employment at its Camden, Arkansas, manufacturing facility by more than 50%, from around 1,200 workers to approximately 1,850.The company has also committed to investing $8 billion to $9 billion through 2030 to modernise more than 20 US facilities, including new munitions production centres in Alabama and Arkansas. Lockheed had previously announced plans to raise annual Patriot PAC-3 interceptor production to 2,000 missiles.The PAC-3 MSE is a hit-to-kill interceptor used by the Patriot air defence system to destroy ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft.The procurement follows reports that concerns over shrinking US missile inventories influenced President Trump's decision to pause plans for a broader military offensive against Iran.According to reports by The New York Times and CNN, senior officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, warned that a wider campaign against Iran could dangerously deplete Patriot interceptor inventories needed by US Central Command for operations across the Middle East.Those concerns emerged after Iranian missile attacks penetrated US air defences during the recent conflict, intensifying pressure on the Pentagon to replenish stocks while maintaining readiness for potential future contingencies in both the Middle East and Europe.
