A U.S. natural hydrogen explorer is turning to cloud computing to speed up the search for underground hydrogen deposits, selecting a platform designed to process massive geological datasets in hours instead of days. Koloma has selected GeoComputing Group’s RiVA private cloud platform to power its exploration and analysis workflows. The platform is designed to tackle one of the biggest challenges in natural hydrogen exploration: processing and interpreting vast amounts of geological data quickly enough to identify promising underground deposits. Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, has gained attention as a potential low-carbon energy source because it occurs naturally underground and requires little processing after extraction. But finding commercially viable reserves remains data-intensive, requiring advanced computing infrastructure capable of handling complex geological models and decades of exploration data. According to GeoComputing, RiVA’s high-throughput architecture can cut processing times from days to hours while improving workflow efficiency. The platform also simplifies the deployment of geoscience applications, allowing exploration teams spread across multiple locations to access the same computing environment without building specialized IT infrastructure. Faster data, faster decisions “As a data-driven natural hydrogen exploration company, we look to work with symbiotic partners in ways that will help accelerate global decarbonization efforts and usher in the next generation of global energy,” said Jerome Bellian, PhD, VP of Emerging Plays at Koloma. Bellian said the company chose RiVA because it supports traditional oil and gas datasets and applications that can be adapted for the emerging natural hydrogen industry. “It is critical that we have the best-in-class technology to make the most informed decisions quickly, and RiVA is the only technology on the market that allows us to do this.” GeoComputing said its platform currently supports more than 200 petro-technical applications used across exploration and production activities. Each application is pre-tested and integrated into the platform to reduce deployment time and improve reliability for end users. Scaling hydrogen exploration Koloma also expects the platform to reduce the burden on its internal IT team. “RiVA gave us the geoscience computing platform we needed without requiring us to build and support a costly specialized environment ourselves,” said Richard Haynie, Head of IT at Koloma. Haynie added that GeoComputing’s engineers remained involved beyond deployment, giving both IT staff and geoscientists direct access to technical support while allowing the company’s lean IT team to focus on business operations. In addition to supporting exploration workflows, the RiVA platform includes integrated disaster recovery capabilities intended to improve business continuity and protect critical exploration data. John Creevan, CEO of GeoComputing, said the partnership reflects a shared focus on using data-driven technologies to reduce exploration risks and costs while improving access to new energy resources.
