US man watches 1,207 movies in a year, sets Guinness World Record

Hoskin watched the films at his local Regal Cinema in York Haven, Pennsylvania, between April 2024 and April 2025.For most people, watching three films in a day would be a long movie marathon. For Glenwood Hoskin Jr., it became part of his daily routine for an entire year. The 60-year-old American from Pennsylvania watched 1,207 films at cinemas over 12 months, averaging 3.3 movies a day, to set a Guinness World Record.According to the official website of Guinness World Records, Hoskin watched the films at his local Regal Cinema in York Haven, Pennsylvania, between April 2024 and April 2025. His total broke the previous record of 777 films, held by fellow American Zachariah Swope, who had achieved it in 2023.The record attempt required more than a love of films. Hoskin had to plan his days around cinema schedules, choose screenings that allowed him to watch as many movies as possible and spend long hours at the theatre. On some days, he arrived early in the morning and stayed until midnight. “I really found it enjoyable being out of the house, and I always like a challenge and a goal to meet,” Hoskin told Guinness World Records. “I am also an organized person, so the work I put into this also made it enjoyable.”How he managed to watch more than 3 films every dayHis daily routine involved checking cinema listings and arranging his visits around available showtimes. (Photo: Guinness World Records)Hoskin said he discovered the record category while browsing the Guinness World Records website. He came across two cinema-related records: the most screenings of the same film attended and the most films watched in a cinema in one year.He considered attempting the first category but found it difficult because films often moved from theatres to streaming platforms before he could watch them enough times. He eventually focused on the annual cinema-viewing record.Another cinema enthusiast at Regal had attempted a similar challenge, which encouraged Hoskin to give it a try. “I found out everything that I would need to do beforehand, and planned to start in the spring so I would likely break the current record of 777 before winter,” he said. “I hate driving in the winter, so anything after that was just extra.” His daily routine involved checking cinema listings and arranging his visits around available showtimes. He tried to fit in as many screenings as possible, sometimes watching films from early morning until midnight.Hoskin initially expected to cross the previous record before winter. However, Pennsylvania experienced a relatively mild winter, allowing him to continue visiting the cinema and take his final count much higher than he had planned.Cartoon films and comedies were among his favouritesDespite watching more than 1,200 films, Hoskin did not say that he disliked any of them. Animated films were among his favourites, partly because they were often shorter and easier to fit into his schedule. He also enjoyed comedies, particularly the experience of watching them with an audience. He named The Wild Robot (2024) as one film that surprised him. He also enjoyed Deadpool & Wolverine (2024).Hoskin said he preferred watching films in theatres rather than at home, especially comedies. “It's nice to get out of the house and see movies, especially comedies,” he said. “They seem to be better in a theatre with people.”How he kept the movie marathon affordableHe used a Regal Unlimited membership, which Guinness World Records reported cost approximately $28 a month.Watching several films every day could have become expensive, but Hoskin had a way to manage the cost. He used a Regal Unlimited membership, which Guinness World Records reported cost approximately $28 a month and allowed him to watch an unlimited number of films at participating cinemas. He also carried food prepared at home and ate between screenings instead of buying every meal at the theatre. The long hours spent sitting did not mean he remained in his seat throughout the day. Hoskin walked around the cinema, both indoors and outside, between films. He used these breaks as his daily exercise. From a personal challenge to a Guinness World RecordHoskin's achievement surpassed the previous benchmark of 777 films by 430 movies. His final count of 1,207 was officially recognised by Guinness World Records under the category for the most films seen in a cinema in one year. The record was not simply about spending more time watching movies. It required him to keep track of screenings, plan around showtimes, manage expenses and maintain the routine for 12 months.
