Unemployment rate falls to 5.1% in July as labour force participation rises

Overall unemployment among people aged 15 years and above fell to 5.1% in July, lower than both the previous month and the same month last year.India’s labour market showed signs of improvement in July, with more people joining the workforce and the unemployment rate declining, according to the latest PIB release.The data released for July 2026 showed that both the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) and Worker Population Ratio (WPR) increased during the month, while the unemployment rate fell.LFPR RISES ACROSS RURAL AND URBAN AREASThe overall LFPR for people aged 15 years and above rose to 55.4% in July from 54.4% in June. LFPR measures the share of the population that is either working or looking for work.The increase was seen in both rural and urban areas. Rural LFPR rose by 1.4 percentage points from the previous month to 58% in July.Female participation also improved. Female LFPR increased to 34.4% in July, up 1.7 percentage points from June.The rise was particularly sharp in rural areas, where female WPR increased to 37.2% in July from 34.7% in June.WORKER RATIO RECORDS FIRST RISE SINCE FEBRUARYThe overall WPR for people aged 15 years and above increased to 52.5% in July. This was the first increase in the ratio since February 2026.Rural areas saw a stronger improvement, with WPR rising to 55.4% in July. This was 1.6 percentage points higher than in June and one percentage point above the level recorded in July last year.UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DECLINESThe unemployment rate also improved during the month.
