Ukraine Presents Domestically Developed Pegas IFV

Ukraine has unveiled Pegas, its domestically developed tracked infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) that could eventually become the country’s first locally designed vehicle of its kind to enter serial production. The vehicle is being developed by the Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau, the same firm behind Ukraine’s T-84 main battle tanks (MBTs), Ukraine’s modernized version of the Soviet T-80 MBT. Ukraine currently operates a broad range of Soviet- and Western-made tracked IFVs. Pegas is intended to be a domestic addition to that fleet, though the project remains under development and no production schedule has been announced. NATO-standard armors According to the specifications presented at the exhibition, the vehicle’s frontal armor is designed to meet Level 6 of NATO’s STANAG 4569 protection standard, while the remaining sections of the hull are rated at Level 4. The stated protection levels are intended to allow the front of the vehicle to withstand 30mm ammunition and its other sides to resist 14.5mm armor-piercing rounds. According to the presentation, additional armor can be installed to protect the vehicle against weapons such as the RPG-7 anti-tank rocket launcher. Pegas is also expected to carry electronic warfare (EW) equipment to counter drones. Mixture of onboard armaments The proposed armament includes a 30mm automatic cannon, a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, two anti-tank guided missiles and a 30mm automatic grenade launcher. The weapons are mounted in a remote combat module. The module shown on the model resembles Ukraine’s BM-7 Parus, but the vehicle is expected to enter production with a different module called Topaz, if the project reaches that stage. Performance and capabilities Pegas is 8 meters (26 feet) long, 3.2 meters (10.5 feet) wide and 3.3 meters (10.8 feet) tall. Its stated combat weight is 35 metric tons. The vehicle is designed to reach a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour (43 mph) and has a stated operational range of 500 kilometers (310 miles). Developers said it could operate at altitudes of up to 3,000 meters (9,840 feet) above sea level and emphasized its intended cross-country mobility. Based on the stated dimensions and weight, Pegas is larger and heavier than Poland’s Borsuk infantry fighting vehicle and is roughly comparable in weight to an unloaded German KF41 Lynx. The presentation did not provide information on how many troops Pegas can transport, its engine or the current stage of prototype testing. Pegas has not yet entered serial production. If development is completed and manufacturing begins, it would become Ukraine’s first domestically developed tracked infantry fighting vehicle to reach mass production. Ukraine previously pursued several projects in this category, including designs based on tank chassis and other existing armored platforms. Those efforts remained limited to models or prototypes.
