AN EARTHQUAKE struck a UK town leaving homes “shaking and rumbling” as residents felt the ground suddenly jolt. The 2.2-magnitude tremor hit just before 7.50pm yesterday, with people across Grimsby and nearby areas reporting a sudden bang. They said: “I felt what felt like a really quick shake in my house, I thought something heavy had fallen down upstairs or in the loft.” Another said they “felt a bang like the house being hit”. A third resident wrote on Facebook: “Felt the house shake and rumble.” Another said: “I heard a deep rumble, I thought it was thunder.” The BGS said the epicentre was in the Scartho area of North East Lincolnshire. A 2.2 magnitude earthquake is considered a minor tremor and would generally only be felt by people close to the epicentre. Most read in The Sun BGS data shows around 200 to 300 earthquakes of this kind are recorded across the UK every year. But the area has experienced much stronger quakes in the past. A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck Grimsby in June 2018, with reports of people feeling it up to 60 miles away. That came ten years after the area’s most significant earthquake in decades struck shortly before 1am on February 27, 2008. The huge tremor measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and was classed as a “moderate” earthquake. Some damage to buildings was reported, while residents described substantial shaking lasting several seconds. It remains the largest recent onshore earthquake recorded in the UK.
