Sign in to your Collider account With the rise of streamers and cord-cutting, some networks have worked to introduce audiences to some of the biggest streaming products and bridge these vastly different worlds. But in the process, the product has changed. With different rules and regulations dictating what and how streaming properties can be shown, one might think it's not doing its due diligence, but the numbers refute that. Simply look at The Traitors. The biggest reality television series in recent memory became a massive success for Peacock, but for its new season, it moved to NBC. The Traitors: New Blood, the first all-civilian season, retains the same DNA as its streaming iteration — diabolical gameplay, a sensational Scottish setting, an Emmy-winning host — but with only about 44 minutes per episode compared to 60 minutes on Peacock, the show feels different. Yet it isn't deterring fans and new viewers. In fact, the numbers don't lie. In its first two weeks, the series drew more than 7 million new cross-platform viewers to the franchise. The Traitors proves the power of viewing synergy and why it's the future frontier of network television. 'The Traitors: New Blood' Sacrificed Storytelling, but Fans Don't Care Hosted by Alan Cumming, The Traitors is the world's favorite social strategy game. Whisked away to the Scottish Highlands, a group of players embark on the ultimate game of deception as Traitors must murder the Faithful each night while the Faithful try to banish them. After four incredible seasons on Peacock, featuring reality stars and celebrities, NBC has picked up the baton for its latest season. Despite putting the game's weight on the shoulders of average Americans rather than fame-familiar faces, fans keep flocking to the show, which remains a viral hit. BI enjoy the performance of it. CPeople simply tell me things. DI expect everybody to lie. REVEAL MY DETECTIVE → The Case Is Assigned Your Detective Is…A great detective is really just a personality with a method attached, which is why we keep remaking the same four of them. Here is yours, what it says about you, and the case for them being the best in the business. ColumboYou let people think you are not a threat and then you simply never go away. Columbo is the only major detective show that tells you who did it in the first ten minutes, because the pleasure was never the puzzle, it was watching a rich man slowly realise he is in trouble. You are underestimated constantly, and you have stopped minding because it keeps working. The show invented the inverted detective format for television and nobody has bettered it since. Peter Falk won four Emmys for the part and played him across five decades. Your flaw is that one more question is rarely one more question. Benoit BlancYou are the most interesting person in the room and you know exactly how to use it. Rian Johnson built Blanc as a gentleman detective who is also an outsider everywhere he goes, which lets him be charming at people who would never otherwise talk to him. You read a room in seconds and you are not above performing a little to speed things up. Rian Johnson was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Knives Out in 2020. Wake Up Dead Man arrived on Netflix in December, making three Blanc films in six years. Your risk is enjoying the performance so much that people stop taking the point seriously. Jessica FletcherEverybody tells you everything, and you have never once asked them to. Jessica Fletcher is a crime novelist from a small town in Maine who is so warm and so obviously trustworthy that suspects confess to her essentially as a social courtesy. You are the person friends call first, and you have a frankly alarming amount of information about everybody. Angela Lansbury was nominated for the Emmy twelve times for this role and never won once. The show ran twelve seasons, and Jamie Lee Curtis is now bringing the character back. Your flaw is that being told everything is only a gift if you know what to do with it. Philip MarloweYou expect to be lied to and you are almost never disappointed. Chandler wrote Marlowe as a man with a rigid private code in a city that has none, which is why he takes the case, solves it, gets nothing out of it and takes the next one. You are the most cynical person your friends know and the one they would call at four in the morning. Bogart played him in The Big Sleep in 1946 and the plot is famously impossible to follow, which matters not at all. Elliott Gould, Robert Mitchum and Liam Neeson have all taken the part, and every version says something about its decade. Your weakness is a code so strict that it mostly punishes the person holding it. ↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ Already renewed for three more seasons on Peacock, the current success on NBC may mean more civilian seasons are on the way. The mission was to introduce the show to a wider mainstream audience, and it has. While retaining the deception, strategy, and signature elements audiences know, the storytelling has become wildly different. Episodes on NBC broadcast run shorter: the first five episodes totaled about 3 hours and 29 minutes, roughly 38% shorter than the deeper, relationship-focused edits on the streaming platform. So, does The Traitors feel "off," or does NBC know exactly what fans want? Unlike other reality shows, The Traitors lacks a formulaic challenge-elimination format and instead uses weekly cliffhangers to keep viewers coming back week after week. 'The Traitors: New Blood' Players Reveal What We're Missing Image via NBC The strategy-centric version has proven that it doesn't necessarily matter who is playing the game; rather, it's how they're playing. Fans familiar with previous Peacock seasons get full-fledged missions, multiple scenes of Faithfuls and Traitors mingling in the castle, and epic Roundtables where anything can happen. On NBC, it's condensed, and the players know it. Having the opportunity to chat with this season's banished and murdered contestants, they're sharing exactly what's missing. Madeline Kostopulos, the season's first banished contestant, revealed that the edit didn't show her bond with her initial alliance. Coincidentally, both Madeline and Arisa Thomas were banished because of their association with Victor, one of the season's most prominent players, and the narrative focused only on Victor's side. "I think that I was honestly with everyone more, with my alliances more than I was with Victor," Madeline revealed. The narrative arc Madeline may have received in the Peacock version is not translating for network TV. One of the season's recurring storylines has revolved around "FruitGate," in which the Traitors were tasked to "murder in plain sight" by tossing an apple at their intended target. With this plot taking up most of the narrative, the edit cuts other moments. Because Victor has been spearheading the crusade to pin the action on Tomica Adams and Joe Vanella, two of the season's Traitors, the edit has focused almost entirely on anything that remotely revolved around it. Michael Foote's shocking banishment saw his alliance, The Dolls, vote him out. After his elimination, he was frustrated that, in his view, "Everyone had sat down and conspired to discuss the vote of me beforehand." Whether it was true or not, the edit didn't show it, meaning his banishment centered on FruitGate rather than personal betrayal. Players like Mark Zgoda, who are mission-oriented, had much of his experience minimized. "I'm going into a lake in Scotland and just jumping around. Getting to go on an exploding pirate ship, and then the next day, having a giant battering ram. I love it," he said. "It really felt like I was at recess again." As fun as it was, The Traitors' storytelling doesn't necessarily need to rely on that action. It's strategy-first. But viewers don't mind. Network TV Must Learn From 'The Traitors: New Blood' NBC and The Traitors are not the first to explore cross-platform presentation and marketing. Previously, NBC aired the pilot of The Day of the Jackal to entice viewers to catch it on Peacock. ABC brought encore presentations of Hulu hits Paradise and Only Murders in the Building, while many Taylor Sheridan shows, like Tulsa King, made linear debuts to promote their presence on Paramount+. The truth is, it's working. Whether viewers realize it or not, the product is different, but the overall mission of enticing viewers to stream the full series succeeds. Though the network version may not be the "exact" version you see on the streamers, the cross-platform push should be used and explored further. There are so many incredible shows on streaming that network viewers may not have access to, but with this proven track record, this powerful tool is actually helping the media landscape. No matter what iteration of The Traitors you're watching on NBC, you're still watching it. Long-running juggernauts like Survivor and The Amazing Race have extended their episodes to 90 minutes to ensure the edit presents the full story. Given The Traitors: New Blood's success, NBC has the ammunition to follow suit. Maybe a deep-cut edit of New Blood will eventually make its way to Peacock, but as presented now, the show remains exceptional entertainment. The Traitors: New Blood airs Thursdays at 8:00 pm on NBC and is available to stream the next day on Peacock. Release Date January 12, 2023 Network Peacock Showrunner Stephen Lambert Contestants in the game move into a majestic castle and work as a team to complete a series of dramatic and challenging missions to earn money for the prize pot. Some contestants are traitors some are loyal.
