Traffic grinds to halt on M5 after lorry erupts into flames – as drivers warned of 4-mile queues and 45-minute delays

A MAJOR UK motorway has ground to a halt after a HGV burst into flames. The M5 outside of Bristol is currently closed between junctions 19 and 20 with drivers facing delays of 45 minutes. Queues of up to four miles have already built on the busy road after a lorry caught fire on the carriageway. It remains unclear what caused the fire to erupt with images from the scene showing plumes of smoke pouring from the back of the vehicle. Flames can be seen tearing through the HGV as crews work to extinguish the fire. In an update, National Highways said traffic had since been released but was still moving slowly. Emergency services remain on the scene with queues of built-up traffic moving slowly. National Highways said: “Traffic has been released on the M5 southbound between J19 to J20 near Clevedon Lanes 1 and 2 remain closed while emergency services work to make the area safe. “Delays of around 20 minutes are reported, with approximately 2 miles of congestion.
