Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is shaping up to be the biggest movie of the summer, but it’s not expected to be much of a menswear movie. Fair enough. Nothing against gladiator sandals, leather skirts, and Marvin the Martian helmets, but their utility in a contemporary wardrobe is minimal at best. In spite of this (or maybe because of it), the cast has been on a serious red-carpet heater in recent weeks, sporting a series of immaculate looks that are to modern tailoring what their Odyssey costumes are to sword-and-sandal cosplay.At last night’s New York premiere, for example, Tom Holland and Matt Damon absolutely nailed two distinct takes on age-appropriate suiting, creating a template for dressing with gravitas and style at any age.TheStewartofNY / WireImageDamon, who is 55 (and has the salt-and-pepper beard to prove it), showed up decked out in head-to-toe Ralph Lauren Purple Label. Lauren’s top-tier tailoring line, which combines classical European silhouettes with top-shelf materials, has been a red-carpet go-to for decades, but—as with any tailored look—the way Damon wore his navy blue suit was far more consequential than the name on the label. The fit was impeccable, with a golden ratio of lapel-to-collar-to-tie proportions polished off with a jaunty pair of brown monkstraps and a white pocket square. The dark brown suit, which the brand describes as a double-weave wool crewneck jacket with tailored flared pants, riffs on a classic double-breasted silhouette with a kimono-inspired single-lapel cut that’s fastened with concealed buttons and designed to be worn without a dress shirt. The pants, meanwhile, are—as the name suggests—both tailored and flared, adding a dash of breezy 1970s flavor to the look, especially when paired with Fear of God’s brown suede ankle boots.Anyone with a formal event to attend in the near future should take note. It’s not to say that a 25-year-old can’t look great in a traditional suit, or a 55-year-old can’t rock Fear of God with the best of ‘em. But for most of us, there’s a real power in dressing your age.
