Today’s Captain America Twist Could Implode Steve Rogers’ Fandom

The following contains major SPOILERS for Captain America #15.Steve Rogers’ Captain America is neck-deep in a pot of water that’s come to a rolling boil. And not just because he’s physically in a coma, on his deathbed, yet spiritually in Marvel Comics’ iteration of Hell, either. Captain America #15 sees Steve defeat Red Skull alongside Doctor Doom and march with Veratok and a batch of demons and freed souls toward Mephisto, hopefully with some untold plan in mind, as Victor von Doom considers how they could exploit Mephisto’s predictability. The way this issue concludes, however, suggests that their plan will need to be quite brilliant, for the sake of their souls. In Captain America #15, Mephisto makes deals with Doctor Doom and Captain America in exchange for their souls. To Doom, Mephisto offers to revive Doom and torture the soul of Valeria von Frazen, who had become Mephisto’s servant in Hell. Doom accepts, which means that, whenever he dies again, his soul will belong to Mephisto forever, “unable to rebel or walk freely through this realm.” What Mephisto offers in exchange for Steve’s soul is “freedom” for everyone else, specifically in the form of “no more dictatorships, no more iron-fisted rulers,” ensuring that “the world was well and truly free, democracies blooming everywhere, people’s lives their own.” And Steve accepts. Hauntingly, in an attempt to persuade Steve, Mephisto mentions that he “wouldn’t be the first good man” to make a deal with him, accompanied by a panel depicting Peter Parker. This is the most explicit acknowledgment of Spider-Man’s controversial “One More Day” storyline that we’ve received in recent memory, and Captain America #15 ends with Steve potentially making an even more polarizing choice—a choice that could either be considered a mistake or the right choice, depending on who you ask—than the one Peter made almost 20 years ago in Marvel Comics history. Indeed, Steve has literally offered Mephisto his soul, and it’s not yet clear how Mephisto’s bargain will be manifested, much less how a world as dramatically different as the one he proposed will take shape, though Black Panther/Namor: Doomed #1 is something of a spoiler regarding the events of Captain America #15. For better or worse, we may be bearing witness to Captain America’s own “One More Day” storyline right now, and the ramifications this deal has on Steve’s lore could go on to plague the character for decades, not unlike how Mephisto’s deal has irreparably soiled Spider-Man comic book lore.
