These cities will see total solar eclipse on August 12: Is yours on the list?

A total solar eclipse on August 12 will plunge parts of the Northern Hemisphere into brief darkness. The event will reveal the solar corona for study, while remaining invisible from India. The moon blots out the sun, during a total solar eclipse, as seen from Carbondale, Illinois, U.S. April 8, 2024. (Photo: Reuters)A spectacular celestial event is set to darken parts of the Northern Hemisphere on August 12, when the Moon will pass directly between the Sun and Earth, creating a total solar eclipse.During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely covers the Sun's bright visible surface, or photosphere. What makes the event possible is a remarkable coincidence: although the Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon, it is also roughly 400 times farther away. This makes both objects appear nearly the same size in Earth's sky. As the Moon moves across the Sun, its shadow sweeps across Earth's surface. The darkest part of this shadow, called the umbra, creates the narrow path of totality. Anyone inside this path will see the Sun disappear behind the Moon. For most locations experiencing totality, the period of complete darkness will last less than two minutes. Near the centre of the eclipse path, however, totality can last around 2 minutes and 18 seconds.WHICH CITIES WILL SEE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE? The eclipse will be visible in its total phase across a narrow path stretching through Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, the Atlantic Ocean, Spain and a small part of Portugal.Much of Europe, along with parts of North America and northwestern Africa, will witness a partial eclipse.
