The world’s tallest and fastest spinning rollercoaster has been announced at one US amusement park

Plans for the world’s tallest and fastest spinning rollercoaster have been unveiled for an adventure park in New Jersey.Bakunawa, a new thrill ride inspired by a mysterious sea serpent from Philippine folklore, is set to open doors at the new Shoreline Pier at The Boardwalk area in 2027.Six Flags says it will break several world records - including titles of the fastest and tallest spinning - and will boast the first free-spinning, floorless coaster vehicles.This means that its trains will rotate naturally throughout the track, so no two will ever be the same.A projection of what the rollercoaster will look like (Six Flags Great Adventure)Describing the promised adventure, Six Flags said: “After an exhilarating 382-foot climb to the spire’s peak, your spinning train pauses - face-up, face-down or sideways, depending on your luck - before plummeting back down the way you came.”Bakunawa will stand 382 feet tall and reach speeds of up to 100 mph along a 3,163-foot track.It will use two trains carrying 20 riders each, with each adventure lasting about two minutes and 17 seconds. To be allowed on the ride, a minimum height requirement of 48 inches is required.“Ascend the spire and split the sky on Bakunawa - the fastest and tallest spinning launch coaster in the world,” the announcement said.The ride will break several world records (Six Flags Great Adventure)“Inspired by Bakunawa, a legendary creature of folklore, this coaster reimagines the serpent’s coiling ascent as it attempts to devour the moon. “Feel the pull of the eclipse as you launch through the world’s fastest inversion, reaching speeds up to 100 miles per hour. After spiralling 382 feet into the air, you plummet back to earth, spinning to the shore as Bakunawa returns to the sea.”An exact date for Bakunawa’s debut has not yet been announced, but the ride is replacing the park's legendary Kingda Ka, which was the world's tallest rollercoaster before it shut in 2024.Currently, the “Falcon’s Flight” at Six Flags Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia, which stands at an astonishing height of 534.8 feet, holds the record.Runners-up are the 420-feet-tall “Top Thrill 2” in Sandunsky, Ohio, and “Superman: Escape from Krypton”, located in Valencia, California, at just five feet under.The announcement comes just over a month after the world’s first giga dive coaster opened at Six Flags Over Texas.The Tormenta Rampaging Run was officially unveiled on June 26 in Arlington as the centrepiece of Six Flags Over Texas’ 65th anniversary celebration.
