Longlegs' Maika Monroe Transforms Into A Deranged Killer In Victorian Psycho Trailer

The new Victorian Psycho trailer has arrived to spotlight Longlegs’ Maika Monroe in a much different kind of role. Monroe starred in Longlegs as FBI agent Lee Harker, who was hunting down the titular serial killer played by Nicolas Cage. Along with being one of the best horror movies of 2024, the Osgood Perkins-directed and written feature further strengthened Monroe’s status as a scream queen. This time around, she’s switching from protagonist to antagonist, as seen in the Victorian Psycho trailer below: Based off the same-named novel written by Virginia Felto, who also penned this movie’s screenplay, Victorian Psycho stars Monroe as a governess named Winifred Notty in 1858 England. Winifred is hired to work for the Pounce family at the gothic manor Ensor House, but her disturbing behavior and activities soon draw concern. In the trailer, Monroe’s character claims she has a “darkness” inside of her, which she attributes to a demon named Fred. She also makes the unsettling proclamation that she’ll become a member of the Pounce family someday. Monroe is joined in Victorian Psycho by Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Amy De Bhrún, Ruth Wilson, Jacobi Jupe, and Evie Templeton. Sanctuary’s Zachary Wigon directed this cinematic offering of bloodshed and unhinged thrills, with the trailer clearly laying out how Winifred will leave a trail of bodies at her new job. Longlegs producer Dan Kagan returned to carry out those same duties on Victorian Psycho alongside Wigon, Sebastien Raybaud, and Nick Shumaker. Originally, A24 planned to distribute American Psycho in the United States, and Margaret Qualley was going to play Winifred, having previously worked with Wigon on Sanctuary. However, by March 2025, five months after Qualley’s casting was announced, she exited the production, and Monroe was selected to replace her. A24 also bowed out of releasing the movie, and now Bleecker Street is handling the U.S. distribution. After filming in Ireland in August 2025, Victorian Psycho premiered this past May during the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. The early critical reception was largely positive, with the movie ranking at 77% on Rotten Tomatoes among 26 reviews. The Victorian Psycho novel is Felto’s second, with her first, the psychological thriller Ms. March, releasing in 2021. In 2020, it was announced that The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss would star in a film adaptation of Ms. March being made by Blumhouse, but there have been no updates about the project since then. Monroe was most recently seen starring opposite Tyriq Withers in Universal Pictures’ film adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel Reminders of Him. The actor’s filmography also includes It Follows (her first horror movie), Independence Day: Resurgence, Villains, God is a Bullet, Watcher, and The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. She won Best Actress at the 2016 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards for her performance in It Follows, and she’s been nominated twice more at the ceremony for Watcher and Longlegs. Victorian Psycho will be released in theaters on Friday, September 25, the same day as Universal’s Forgotten Island, Paramount’s Heart of the Beast, and A24’s Primetime, among other movies.
