Before The Mask, Russell worked as a screenwriter and producer before landing his first directing job on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors in 1987. His second film, The Blob, was released in theaters the following year. He also co-wrote the scripts on both projects. TMZ reports that emergency responders were called to Russell's house in the San Diego area on Wednesday, July 23, after he suffered some sort of medical emergency that left him unconscious.
