Intel's LPMD project as the Low Power Mode Daemon for modern Intel Core Ultra desktops and laptops is quite important for achieving peak performance and optimal power efficiency. Here are some of Intel's own findings on the importance of LPMD for Linux gaming Srinivas Pandruvada and Casey Bowman, both of Intel, presented yesterday at the Linux Plumbers Conference (LPC 2026) happening in Prague. Pandruvada is a long-time Intel Linux power management engineer and was emphasizing the importance of LPMD on Linux gaming both for better performance and enhanced power efficiency. With today's hybrid P / E / LPE core layouts and varying workloads, LPMD works as an energy optimizer to ensure Core Ultra SoCs are operating effectively whether in a desktop, laptop, or more recently Intel powered gaming handhelds. While Intel LPMD allows for per-app/software controls and varying policy adjustments via different profiles, even LPMD at its defaults can lead to better gaming performance and efficiency. For showing the impact, benchmark results were shared from an unnamed Panther Lake laptop with Arc Graphics and also an unnamed Panther Lake handheld. In comparing Linux at defaults without LPMD and then the default LPMD configuration without any game-specific tuning, there were gains in some games like Strange Brigade while consuming less CPU power to provide for up to an 11% performance-per-Watt improvement for the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 handheld: Across various games tested were single digit and low double digit percentage improvements to power efficiency while gaming with these Panther Lake devices. Those wishing to learn more can see the presentation assets from LPC 2026. Those unfamiliar with Intel LPMD can find it via GitHub or also available in most Linux distribution repositories.
