The Dyson V11 Origin Is an Older Model, but It Cleans Carpet Better Than Many Newer Vacuums

4 min readDyson has released plenty of newer cordless stick vacuums since the Dyson V11 Origin first made its debut, but that doesn’t mean this older model has stopped being useful. We recommend this version as a reliable high-end vacuum because it still delivers the strong suction power I’ve come to expect from Dyson, specifically when cleaning carpets and area rugs. It also comes with a useful set of attachments, including a crevice tool, dusting brush, and pet hair tool that proved handy for cleaning my couches. That said, the V11 isn’t quite as versatile as some of the latest cordless models. It lacks a soft roller cleaner head for hard floors and doesn’t have a laser dust detection light, two features I’ve come to appreciate when testing other Dyson vacuums. I think the V11 Origin is a strong contender for homes with a lot of carpet or area rugs, rather than as an all-around floor-cleaning machine.ProsGreat suction power on carpetThree suction modesPet hair attachment works well on couches and upholsteryConsNo green laser dust detection lightDoesn't come with a soft roller brush head for hard surfacesKey SpecsWeight6.6 lbListed RuntimeUp to 60 minHEPA FiltrationNoAttachments4Capacity0.4 galImpressive Suction for Carpets and RugsThe V11’s biggest strength is the suction power. My cats love to roll around and shed on my area rugs, and the fabric is light in color, so dirt and pet hair aren’t always the most obvious. The vacuum pulled up an impressive amount of debris that I couldn’t easily see, and the evidence was apparent in the dustbin.Amber JoglarThe vacuum has enough suction power to pick up embedded dirt, hair, and dander.I ran the vacuum on the Medium mode most of the time, but I found Boost mode to be especially effective here, too. It uses significantly more battery, but the extra power was worthwhile when I needed to vacuum embedded pet hair and dirt from in between carpet fibers. It maximizes suction power, so you get even deeper contact on soft surfaces. The included pet hair screw tool was also useful for cleaning my furniture. Its conical brush design is intended to prevent hair from wrapping around the brush roll, and I didn’t notice anything left behind after cleaning an armchair, ottoman, couch, and cat tree.Performance on Hardwood Is PassableThis cordless stick vacuum is capable of handling hardwood floors, and the suction makes quick cleanups pretty easy. However, this is where the vacuum’s age starts to show compared with some of the newer Dyson models. The V11 Origin doesn’t come with a soft roller cleaner head, and that’s one of my biggest complaints about the vacuum. Soft rollers use nylon or microfiber and don’t have bristles, so they’re good for hard floors because they pick up finer debris while being gentler on delicate surfaces. I also wish this model had a headlight to illuminate dust and detritus in darker areas or underneath furniture.Amber JoglarThe shape of the pet hair tool prevents tangles. The vacuum also gets fairly loud on hardwood floors, mostly when running at higher power levels. I wouldn’t rule it out for homes with mostly hard floors, but I’d recommend a different model such as the Gen5detect instead, which comes with the Fluffy Optic soft roller head and a standard vacuum head for different surface types.Battery Life VariesAs with most cordless stick vacuums, runtime varies considerably depending on how much power you use. When starting with partial battery life (20 percent), I got about 13 minutes of runtime when vacuuming in Medium mode. Switching to Eco extended that time to about 21 minutes, while Boost brought the runtime down to roughly four minutes.Amber JoglarThe V11 can run for up to 60 minutes off of a full battery, and doesn’t take long to recharge. That makes Boost better reserved for really dirty areas rather than everyday cleaning. It worked best for me on rugs and carpet when I was trying to remove stubborn pet hair, and where the extra suction felt necessary and made a noticeable difference.I appreciate the V11’s battery life indicator on the LCD panel on the handle, which makes it easy to keep an eye on levels while you’re cleaning. When starting at 20 percent battery, it climbed to 55 percent in just an hour.So even if you do have to pause for a little extra juice, it doesn’t take long for the vacuum to recharge. Dyson states the V11 has a 60-minute runtime off of a full battery, but again this is dependent on what power level you’re using continuously.Final TakeawaysThe Dyson V11 Origin isn’t the most versatile cordless vacuum anymore, but it remains a reliable choice if carpet cleaning is your priority. Its powerful suction and pet hair attachment make it a good pick for homes with pets, too, and I was impressed by just how much hidden debris it picked up.Just keep in mind that it lacks a soft roller brush head and dust detection light, and there are better options out there if you have primarily hardwood floors. But for carpet-focused cleaning, the V11 Origin still has plenty of life left in it.Shop the Dyson V11 OriginOther Cordless Stick Vacuums We RecommendDyson V15 Detect Cordless VacuumNow 24% OffBissell PowerClean FurFinder Cordless Stick VacuumBest with Docking StationTineco Pure One Station 5 Pro Cordless Stick VacuumNow 25% OffAmber is a Reviews Editor with bylines on Popular Mechanics, Runner’s World, Bicycling, and Best Products sites.
