Even the producers themselves are apparently fully on board with the project as well, leaving the funding offered by a larger studio the last thing needed before the project can officially start. Even though both the directors and producers of Honor Among Thieves are still optimistic about the project, they did note that "there are some practical realities with the finance contingent." The directors also claimed that the poor success of the first film was due to a number of external factors like "not-so-great timing" considering its close proximity to the record-breaking Super Mario Bros. movie and the controversy surrounding D&D's licensing changes that dropped just weeks before release. Even though the creators lamented in saying "who knows if it ever gets made," the directors still "loved making the first one," and noted that "there's so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn't filled with exposition or introduction to this family you've already become accustomed to, so you can kind of launch right into the story."
