Credit: Amazon/Lifehacker Table of Contents Apple’s latest flagship headphones, the AirPods Max 2, are currently $429 (down from $549.99) on Amazon—taking $120 off every available color and bringing them within $30 of their lowest price ever, according to price trackers. They’re still a considerable investment, but the AirPods Max 2 have plenty going for them, earning a spot on our shopping editor Daniel’s list of the best over-ear headphones of 2026. PCMag is similarly impressed, giving them an “outstanding” rating for their excellent sound quality, noise cancellation, and seamless integration with Apple devices. Much of what makes the AirPods Max 2 an improvement over their predecessor comes down to two hardware changes: a new high-dynamic-range amplifier and Apple’s H2 chip, replacing the older H1. The amplifier delivers cleaner audio, fuller bass, and better instrument separation with minimal distortion, while spatial audio makes movies and compatible music feel more immersive. Meanwhile, the H2 chip improves active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, and Voice Isolation, which helps callers hear you more clearly when you're speaking from a crowded environment. What do you think so far? Also, noise cancellation is now adaptive, meaning it adjusts how much outside sound comes through as your surroundings change, saving you from constantly switching listening modes. You’ll also find some useful additions beyond audio performance, including Live Translation, which lets you hear supported foreign-language conversations translated through the headphones when paired with a compatible iPhone. The buttons on the headphones can also act as a remote shutter for your iPhone’s camera, which could come in handy for group photos or hands-free recording. All said, the AirPods Max 2 makes the most sense for someone already invested in Apple's ecosystem, since several of their more interesting features depend on compatible Apple devices and software.
