Every indication points to Rockstar Games going bigger and bigger with Grand Theft Auto VI, the hugely anticipated video game that’s 13 years in the making. That includes the music, which will feature a stacked roster of artists; the radio stations are hosted by Bad Bunny, Lana Del Rey, Robyn, and others, while the soundtrack itself will feature original songs by everyone from Travis Scott to Keith Richards. French electronic duo Justice were confirmed as the composers of the game’s score, and they dropped an original song featuring Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, “Flower in a Hurricane.” There are a total of 34 original tracks comprising the game’s soundtrack. GTA VI drops on Nov. 19, and the soundtrack will be released the same day. In addition to streaming, the soundtrack is getting an extensive vinyl release. You’ll be able to pick up exclusive variants from retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Walmart, Best Buy, all of which feature distinctive multicolor pressings of the soundtrack. There’s also shop-exclusive and indie-exclusive variants. Ironically, the huge physical media rollout of the game’s soundtrack comes as disc-based gaming is facing some existential threats. The latest Grand Theft Auto will be the first in the series to get a digital-only release at launch. There are no plans to release a disc-based version of the game at a later date, either, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news reflects a growing change. In July, Sony announced that it was killing off the disc for good, confirming that future PlayStation consoles and games would be digital-only as of January 2028. Sony cited consumer demand, although to suggest there isn’t still enthusiasm for disc-based media runs counter to the data. Crucially, the death of the disc gives gamers less control over their media. If you finished a game, or just didn’t like it, you could sell or trade it, and fans and brick-and-mortar shops were able to set their own prices. Whether or not it comes in a plastic box, a one-time code does not allow for the same flexibility. At the very least, fans can pick up the album on vinyl and CD — and prove that physical media is very much alive.
