The fast-moving fire erupted on a hillside in Northern Nevada outside Reno on Saturday, around 30 to 40 miles north of the Lake Tahoe area. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! It is now threatening to engulf around a thousand homes, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo wrote in a statement that the blaze was “spreading quickly and threatening homes and structures”. He declared a state of emergency for Washoe County. Firefighters and emergency crews are battling the blaze. Truckee Meadows Fire Chief Richard Edwards called the huge wildfire “a very dynamic incident” and urged residents to follow evacuation orders. In Nevada, “Go now” evacuations have already been ordered near Verdi and Somersett. The fire is heading northeast, tearing towards the county’s detention centre. Powerful winds and low humidity also fuelled the flames to rip south and east, expanding the danger zone and completely consuming the entire area around Peavine Peak and the back of the mountain. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered from Raleigh Heights north to Red Rock on the west side of US 395. “Get Set” warnings – telling people to prepare to evacuate – have been given for more than 1,000 threatened homes in North Virginia Street, Hoge Road, Golden Valley, Lemmon Valley and Stead. Thousands of homes were left without power and a highway was partially shut, as a hospital emergency room north of Reno was shut due to evacuations. Reno Mayor Hillary Shieve said: “My heart goes out to anyone in our community who has been impacted by the dangerous and fast-moving Hawk Fire. “Our firefighters and first responders are heroically fighting the fire and the high winds to save lives, homes, businesses, livestock and pets.” Authorities instructed residents to refer to the perimeter map for up-to-date evacuation information.
