Season 1 of the animated Star Wars series is set during the early reign of the Empire, as Maul (Sam Witwer) carries out a plan to rebuild his criminal empire and get revenge against Darth Sidious. Four days before the series premiere, it was announced that the show had been renewed for a second season. At D23's Maul - Shadow Lord panel, where ScreenRant's Kevin Erdmann was in attendance, head writer and executive producer Matt Michnovetz confirmed that season 2 will be released in 2027 and told the audience to "Get ready for it." The announcement confirms that Maul - Shadow Lord season 2 will be among the many projects released in 2027 as the franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary. Earlier this weekend at D23, it was revealed that Ahsoka season 2 will premiere on January 20. Previously announced 2027 releases include the original Star Wars movie returning to theaters for a limited time on February 19, the Luke and Leia novel Twin Crossroads by Beth Revis on April 6, and Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy's new movie Starfighter on May 28.
