Star Trek's 60th anniversary has seen the return of some of the franchise's most beloved icons, with familiar faces finding new life across games, collectibles, and other major releases. Jean-Luc Picard will take command once again as part of Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Star Trek Universes Beyond crossover, which spans six decades of the franchise when it launches this November. Spock is also returning in Star Trek Online's Rediscovered update, which brings together Ethan Peck, Piotr Michael, and archival Leonard Nimoy dialogue to showcase the legendary Vulcan across different eras of his life. Star Trek: Captain’s Chair is returning with Duty and Honor, expanding WizKids' growing deck-building game with four more playable leaders drawn from across the franchise. Worf and Deep Space Nine antagonist Gul Dukat are the first two confirmed captains, with WizKids still keeping the identities of the remaining pair under wraps. The expansion will also introduce additional ships, including the USS Defiant and the Val Jean. Each new captain receives an asymmetrical deck built around their personality, allies, ships, and preferred strategies, creating new match-ups against the game's existing roster. Designed by David Turczi and Nigel Buckle, Captain's Chair is a strategic deck-building game in which players take control of famous Star Trek leaders, command ships and crew, deploy away teams, and build their decks throughout a match. Aside from the deck-building combat elements, the system also emphasizes diplomacy, exploration, and science. The original game featured captains including Jean-Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko, Michael Burnham, Sela, and others, while subsequent releases To Boldly Go and Second Contact have continued expanding the available lineup. A solo mode also allows players to take on an automated opponent. Duty and Honor does require either the original Captain’s Chair, To Boldly Go, or the forthcoming Resistance is Futile to play. The latter is actually a standalone release rather than a conventional expansion and is also scheduled for Q3 2027. It focuses on Voyager and the Borg, adding Captain Janeway, Seven of Nine, Locutus, and the Borg Queen as playable leaders, alongside the USS Voyager and a Borg Cube. Together, the two upcoming Captain's Chair expansion releases are poised to give longtime Star Trek fans a lot to look forward to in 2027 in addition to the other huge announcements celebrating the franchise's 60th.
