Square Enix Officially Teases Final Fantasy Remake We've Begged For

With the first Final Fantasy game releasing all the way back in 1987, it is no wonder that Square Enix has recently been dedicated to remaking and remastering some of its most beloved hits. In recent years, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII have all received either HD upgrades or modern-day ports, but one entry that has been left firmly in the past is Final Fantasy 8. Well, back in 2019, a remastered version of Final Fantasy 8 was released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, but when it comes to official remakes, fans are still waiting. Image via Square Enix However, according to a recent comment by Final Fantasy 14 lead Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, if entries such as Final Fantasy 8 were to receive remakes, they would need even more individual parts than we have seen recently with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. As such, it could be a massive undertaking. Speaking at the recent Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest event, Yoshi-P was joined on stage by Final Fantasy 7 Remake lead Naoki Hamaguchi. It was here that the pair discussed possible remakes of entries such as Final Fantasy 6, 8, and 9, saying, "Of course I understand the feelings of the players, but you gotta think about it. Look at Final Fantasy 6, it's such an incredibly huge game. The scale is just immense." Not only that, but if one of these titles received a remake, fans would want the others to receive the same treatment, leading to years of time being lent to these projects. "So, of course, now because you are working on the Final Fantasy 7 series, I do get that people would be asking for remakes of other titles," Yoshi-P continued. "But if we did remake those other titles, we'd probably end up having to release them in four or maybe even five installments." As Hamaguchi concluded, "That's why I can't just sit here and go, 'Yeah, yeah, I'll remake [FF6],' because it's not quite that easy." It is wishful thinking to believe that so many classic Final Fantasy entries could receive remakes on the same scale as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, but of course, having such an impressive fanbase behind them means that it is will always be called out for by fans. As it stands, a potential remake for Final Fantasy 8 has not been confirmed, but we do know that if it was to come to fruition, we would be looking at another multipart saga spanning across multiple years.
