Their previous triumph came all the way back in November 1974 – when Hull also ran out 2-0 winners. United were playing in the old Second Division at the time following their relegation from the top flight and were managed by Tommy Docherty. Goals from Alf Wood and Ken Wagstaff condemned Docherty’s men to defeat at Boothferry Park. But there could be a bizarre reason for United supporters to remain optimistic despite Saturday’s opening-day horror show. That is because the Red Devils recovered from their last defeat away to Hull to finish the 1974-75 campaign as Second Division champions and secure an immediate return to the top flight. United have not been crowned champions of England since Sir Alex Ferguson led them to their 20th title in 2013 – coincidentally, they also lost their opening game that season, falling 1-0 to Everton. And while one freak historical coincidence will hardly erase the concerns created by their Hull humbling, superstitious Red Devils fans may already be taking it as an unlikely sign that a shock title charge is on the cards.
